Cot bumpers, when to remove?

Hello!

DS has always been a wriggler in his cot and used to get his legs and arms trapped through the bars of the cot. We tried seeing if he'd learn not to do it but a week later he was getting stuck 3 or 4 times a night and it was becoming very distressing.
Anyway we solved the problem by using cot bumpers.

Then he learnt how to wriggle all the way to the top of the cot cot and wuld wake up 3 or 4 times a night because of this so I started putting a rolled blanket under his sheet either side of him to stop him rolling about. He has a sleeping bag but still manages to wriggle all over the place without the bumpers and rolled blankets.

I make sure the bumpers are tucked into his mattress so he can't pull them out and we secure the ribbons so he can't get hold of them but I am now worried as he is nearly 7 months ands I have heard stories of babies using cot bumpers to climb out of their cots but I don't know how I can remove the bumpers without risking him getting stuck and waking in the night.

Has anyone else encountered this problem and how did you deal with it?

Has anyone's child used their bumpers as a climbing frame?

Thanks

My DS is 10 months and still has his cot bumper (it's a half one only). I lowered his cot about 2 months ago, and was going to remove it, but decided not to. It's well tucked in and in fact is tied to the base of the bed so he can't pull it out. He's a wriggly sleeper, and I'd be forever getting up to find his dummy for him if he didn't have the bumper. He can already stand up in his cot, but is showing no interest in climbing out (yet).

Thank you for the link MickeyMixer. I've been doing my research and it says that it is unlikely that a child could climb out using their cot wrap.

Thank you for your reply too amyboo. It's nice to hear that your DS is showing no signs of climbing out! I really want to keep our cot bumper as long as possible as DS quite likes looking at it and it gives me peace of mind. I'm not worried that he'll be harmed by it as, like you, I have securely fitted it but I was worried that he might climb out.

I'm going to buy some of the safedreams stuff, just in case!
