what do you do when your baby doesn't lie down (doing shushpat)

hi

im doing shush pat to get ds to sleep. we moved from his hammock last friday in which he was rocked to sleep to a cot, and we've been using shush pat to get him to sleep.

now, the whole cot thing is new to me, and one thing i'm discovering is that ds sometimes won't lie down (which means i can't pat him). sometimes i lie him back down again, well usually i do that, but sometimes i just get fed up and tired of that as it doens't seem to work, he just rolls over and sits up again or starts crawling round his cot.

a couple of times i just gave up and took him downstairs for half an hour to get the apparent unspent energy out of his system and this worked well. but i don't want to do that every time.

any tips?

thanks

Hello there,
We were on ther same thread yesterday where you mentioned this. I've just been leaving my DS to get on with it - he's been crawling round his cot for a little while before each nap. If he actually stands up I'll lay him down again, and he's got bored after 10 minutes or so and rolled over to sleep. Might you try that? Is he definitely ready for sleep?

Hiya

Think the BW shush pat is only good for babies under 6 months (and didn't work for my dd at 4 months as it wound her up!)

For 6 months plus, PUPD recommended, and for babies who can pull themselves to standing, just put down. Like LaTristesse says, think there's a lot to be said for leaving the baby to it if they're just amusing themselves and go back in if crying (eg.not mantra cry). Hope that helps

Thank you. As you can see La Tristesse my idea of bringing baby downstairs and trying again later isn't foolproof...mainly when i have stuff I want to get done during his nap...

I don'tthink ds will play in his cot while we're not there, its too new for him. Then again I didn't think he would sleep at all in his cot and he did so maybe we'll try it.

mewkins i was ready for PUPD but was advised to try shush pat first, now i'm confused! maybe on the thread when shush pat was suggested they didn't know how old ds is (he's 8.5mo). do you think i should maybe abandon shush pat then and try PUPD?

Yeah I think so, www.babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=64275.0 explains what should be used and when. I think the general consensus is that babies are too aware after about 6 months so find shush pat too distracting for sleep iykwim?
