11mo used to nap - now won't

DD has been easy to put down for her daytime naps since she was about 4 months. Sleepy signs, put her down, occasionally a brief whimper but most of the time, out she goes. She only ever napped for 45 minutes and nothing I did could ever extend that.

She's had a disrupted few weeks, what with staying with various relatives over Christmas, and two weekends ago DH and I left her at my mum's for two nights while we had a mini-honeymoon.

Since then, so just over a week, she has refused daytime naps. She will go down fine for nighttime sleep, but wakes often, up to five times. (We'd got down to one night waking before Christmas.)

She is still rubbing her eyes, pulling at her ear, and yawning at nap times - but when I put her in her cot, she stands up and fusses or cries. She'll keep this up for well over an hour, with me putting her back down occasionally, until I give up. Today she had half an hour in the morning (after two hours of trying!) and no afternoon nap.

Surely she still needs daytime sleep? What am I doing wrong?

Hi there,

my DD did the same thing when she was just under a year - unfortunately she just got too nosy ;-)
A close friend recommended a Snooze Shade which helps babies sleep in the pram and I took her for a walk at naptime and she went to sleep - it was really amazing. I am still using that when I need to now and she's nearly 2 it really works , she knows when it goes on that it's time to sleep and she can't pull it around like the blanket I used to use ;-). I did get her back in the cot too occasionally but rather than get frustrated with her I now use it as a good opportunity to get some shopping and other errands done ;-) - and if we come home I leave it on the pram in the house till she wakes up.
I find now that if she slept one day she might miss a nap the next day but she sleeps better at night as she had been overtired before and eats her tea much more happily.
Hope that helps..

DD2 did that a few weeks ago. SHe would take cat naps on me in the carrier during the school run and that was it for the day.
She is also starting to whinge again during the night. Confused
She is now napping.
I found that she needs to be very tired (i.e. she won't nap everyday) she runs a lot so that helps. She is also disturbed easily (if DD1 is there or her dad she won't nap), it has to be quiet in the house.
Outside in the pram, she will go but after a loooong time, life is too exciting at the moment. She will go easier in the carrier (Ergo) still facing me.

At home, I would try different times if I were you
Today I put her in bed 4 times for her nap, she showed sign of needing a morning nap. Finally down at 12h.
Let her 15 min max, then pick her up and do your things as normal and try again later.

DD2 has also been teething a lot, teeth 13 and 14th can been seen now, so it is like a continuous thing in the background. (try calpol or teething gels?)

She has also been ravenous, needing the lunch earlier
and a snack in the afternoon. She won't go to sleep if hungry.

HTH

Thanks mama

I will definitely try different times, it can't hurt, it may help...

Thanks meercat she will sometimes go off in her buggy but I really need her to go down indoors, so I can get stuff done!

My friend who used it first just used to put baby in the pram and cover and then walk for 5 mins till asleep and then leave pram in the hallway so she could do stuff.. worth a try ;-)

PS if it's teething I swear by Anbesol - I tried all the homeopathic and other things but it works!
