5 mo old waking

Not sure if this should be here, or in feeding or in AIBU! DS2 is 5 mo and ebf. He doesn't sleep through, not a problem for me. Usually wakes at about midnight then 5 ish. Last few nights it's been more like 10, then waking screaming at 1, then 5. DH feels that he's old enough to go without feeding at 1 and tries to settle him (the old pat shush). Last night DS2 was getting completely hysterical and DH felt he was making things worse by being there, so left him for 5 mins, went back and he calmed pretty quickly after that. I know it's not full blown CC but I'm not sure it's what I want to do. We did do CC with DS1 when he was much older, but he'd been sleeping through for ages and then was doing random waking.
I just think DS2 is still little and probably is still hungry, but DH disagrees. Opinions and advice welcome!

I think at 5mo, if he's had a good feed at 10, there's no harm in trying to settle without a feed. You can always give it say 10 mins and feed if he won't settle after that.

I would assume that if he had been hungry he wouldn't have settled after 5mins?

There's a big growth spurt at 6 months. Teething can also start around this time anyway.

Maybe try some teething gel next time he wakes?

My DD is 6 months and has always been EBF, being doing BLW for around a month now.

She feeds about every 3 hours during the day - and the night! I was thinking that this was taking the mick a bit, surely she doesn't really need to feed at such short intervals! But then got her weighed for the first time in ages today and she was bang on the 75th centile, which she has been on all the way, which makes me think maybe she does need to feed that often.

I am hoping once she is having more solids she will naturally decrease the bf. I think you will have a long battle on your hands if you try to 'train' your baby out of the 1am feed, after all he is still far too young to understand or rationalise.

Nursery nurse told me that usually a hungry cry starts off as quiet grumbling and build up. I've found that with 7mth old DD screaming on waking is usually teething pain (she's on her 6th tooth!) or in need of a winding. Normally I sit her up in her cot and she does a big burp and goes back to sleep fairly easily
