Does anyone use white noise to get LO off to sleep at night

My 11 week old cries unconsolably everynight for an hour after being put in his moses basket asleep.

We have tried to rock, feed, wind and shush him but nothing seems to settle him anymore.

We have thought about playing white noise in the bedroom to try and settle him as he has fallen to sleep with the hoover.

Wondered what others expriences are - are we creating a rod for our own back if we introduce it? will we end up having to play white noise all night to get him to settle?

Worth a try. If it works who cares if it's on all night!

We use wave sounds for our 11 week old ds - turn it up super loud to help her get to sleep and then turn it down throughout the evening and keep it on low throughout the night - figured I was happy if this turned into a sleep association. Definitely worth a try!

DS was older when we got him, but I found that the washing machine was amazing for settling him (his room was across the hall from the kitchen). Once he was asleep he didn't need the white noise all night.

I even find that white noise works for me when DH is away (we have moved house recently so it's "strange" and I'm not used to the noises the house makes yet). If you have an iPhone there are a range of apps by Sleepmaker that let you choose a noise and set a timer.

You can buy cds or there is a thing called a 'soundspa' which has various sounds - google it.

We do the same as MissRed for 12-week-old DS. We just use a detuned radio - experimented with wave sounds etc but found that worked best. Less of a rod than rocking to sleep, which we're trying to wean him off as he's getting heavy! If you go away, just take your ipod dock or radio etc and bingo.

Another advantage is that it covers up noise from the house/next door so you don't have to tiptoe around or evening or worry about baby being disturbed.

all evening

We used hairdyer noise (on a CD) for about 6 months with DS. Then he started to be soothed by music as well. Do what works and don't worry about it!

Yes, worked for both of mine.
