sleep habits becoming worse

Can anyone tell me where i've gone wrong? At two weeks old my daughter was sleeping 8 - 10 hours a night, and would quite happily settle herself for naps during the day and last thing at night by just being swaddled. By about 6 months she was waking once for a feed about 3am. Then as she cut her first tooth she woke at 12 - 1am. She also woke at 6am and not her ususal 7/7.30am
Now at 10 months old she often wakes 40mins or so after her bedtime, again at 1am and at 3.30am, and wakes for good at 5.45am. At that time she is rubbing her eyes, yawning and crying (i'm sure she doesn't want to be awake but she won't go back to sleep. i only feed her at 3.30am, and in the morning try to make her wait until at least 6.30am before feeding her.
The other problem is getting herself to sleep for naps or at bedtime - she screams unless i stand next to her cot and hold her hand while she falls asleep. Tonight it took 20 minutes (it's getting longer and longer each night) I would really like to be able to put her in her cot and she settle herself.
Does anyone have any ideas?

By process of elimination i would have to gues that it could be one of three possible things.

  1. pain from teeth, do you give any pain killers pre bed? Neurofen is probably the best because it lasts up to 8 hours. (can it be given to under 12 month olds though, i cant remember?)
  2. hunger, is she having a good tea/supper pre bed? 3)what time is she put to bed, could you extend bed time to an hour later and see if this makes a difference to her early morning wakenings?

I genuinely dont think that you have "gone wrong" as such, i think that a babies sleep pattern is NEVER that prescriptive that it is the same night in night out.
The nature of growth and development means that every day will be different.

Leafy,

I am having similar problems with dd who is 8 months old. From approx 12 weeks old she slept for 11 hrs per night. Over last month or so, she wakes during the night with no real pattern and has taken to only sleeping in our bed sometimes. I thought I had her sleep sorted but apparently not

From what ive learnt, there is never anything predictable about babies, one week they sleep through the next they dont.

My dd never naps unless being held but for bedtime we did a version of pu/pd.
We put her in the cot and left a hand on her side/back if she tried to stand up we would add a bit of pressure. once she relaxed we would remove our hand and stand by the cot. If she stood up wed lay her down and put the hand back. Wed keep doing this until she relaxed enough for us to leave the room. If she stood up we went back in and started again.
It took us a week of doing this and going back and forth but now we just lay her in the cot and leave and shes fine.

It's funny isn't it. For months I've put up with DDs sleep habits and then I finally get round to trying to find some help and she sorts herself out! By using a minimal amount of controlled crying she is pretty much putting herself to sleep and she is now only waking once at 3.30am for a feed. She then sleeps through till 6.30am, and this morning when she wopke at that time sounding a bit crabby, i managed to get her to go back to sleep till 7.30. BLISS!!!
