2 day old baby sleeping question

Dear all

I've got a lovely new son. He's only two days old - this is his first night home. Both tonight and last night in hospital he really didn't settle at all in the moses basket/crib. The only way he'll sleep is either on top of me or my husband's chest.

Is this normal? It means I have to stay awake to watch them or vice versa.

Any tips for getting him to sleep next to us in moses basket? We've tried swaddling, waiting until he's in a deep sleep before putting him down etc...

Thanks

Because he's getting used to this big wide world! He's used to sloshing round inside you so lying on you and hearing your heartbeat etc probably soothes him.

I wouldn't worry how, or where he sleeps right now, as long as he does sleep! It's very early days.

Congratulations and enjoy every moment!

This has made me smile, although I understand that you're obviously very tired and need to sleep too.

I've no advice, it's been so long since I've had a baby.

Congratulations though Smile

And sorry for completely useless post.

Let him sleep on you, really this is entirely normal and better for them as they feel comforted - you also have to remember that they do need to recover from being born too as it is not easy for them so do need some extra cuddles in the first few days.

I have 4 children and none of them have slept in a moses basket at this young age they were just handed around between me and my DH and now, the older children for a cuddle.

Congratulations to you, go and take your baby to bed and get some sleep.

Congratulations!

Our dd did exactly what you describe for the first few nights at home. I bet within the next fews days your son will be happy to be in his moses basket. It is knackering in the mean time but I would be very surprised if it continues.

My rubbish advice is to try not to stress about it! We got quite upset and doom-laden about it, thinking she would never sleep in her moses basket, and I wish we hadn't wasted time worrying about it!

Also, please, please sleep when the baby sleeps in the day (if you are able to, eg don't have any other children). I did not take this advice and now when I look back, I wonder why not.

One more practical tip I can offer is to put a hot water bottle into the moses basket for a few minutes before laying your baby down (take it out before you put him in, obv!). This seemed to help our dd.

I second what napwhatnap said. I could have had a much easier life if I hadn't worried about Moses basket etiquette!
He needs to be close to you or his dad as a new born so just go with it. Congratulations and it's a lovely time of year to have a new born.

Oh and there will be lots of people who know about co sleeping with a new born.

Ah seasister I am havin the excat same problem but my lil boy is one month tomorro and everttime he hits the moses basket he screams and it takes age to settle him.... I am also having to to the co sleeping thing .. I wedge myself in on the sofa and let him sleep on my chest the first two weeks I didn't sleep at all as I ws scared I would suffocate but eventually I hd to start sleepin with him out of desperaation!! The advise I was given was...... Try either heating the moses basket wiv a hot water bottle or a blanket so the cold doesn't wake him, sit with your hands on him soothing him everytime he fluuers until he is fast asleep, roll up a towel to squidge him in so he feels cuddles, or a rolled up item of clothing that smells of you or your partner, try putting him in his pram or an amby hammock to sleep, ... That's all I can think of off the top of my head and I must say they have only worked for us once wen we tried them all at once then the next night he sussed us and it hasn't worked since so I'm still on the sofa!!!! But hopefully u wil hve more luck !! Let ne know how u get on and if u receive any other advice ........ Congrats and Good luck
