5 month old constantly wakens through the nite

please help!!

I have a 5 month girl who was a gr8 sleeper until 2 months ago. Since then she wakens approx every hour but will quickly settle once dummy is put back into her mouth. Bless her around this time she started to become constipated and appeared to be hungier. Advised to change her formula to SMA White - which would help delay weaning for a while. This helped to regulate her nappies but was still hungry. Recently started to wean her which she has responded to really well but still wakened during the nite. Lately her nappies have got thicker and at one stage last week was badly constapated, an unfortunate ailment passed on from her fathers side. Thankfully this has resolved itself but I feel this is going to be something the wee dote will continue to suffer from. At one stage was advised to move her onto Omneo Comfort Stage 1 milk as she often pukes up a mouthful of milk when being burped. This apparently causes runny nappies which for a slightly constipated child would this be a bad thing?? May also be at early stages of teething as fist constantly in mouth.

Anyway questions - how can I get her to sleep through the night without wakening so frequently? Is it cramps which are causing this -if so how can I help her with this? Any advise on changing her formula or special things I should introduce 2 her diet? Any tips 2 help ease pain of teething given that it might be a while before any teeth actually appear?

Any advice gr8ly appreciated

If she is waking every hour I would say that she is hungry or you could check to see if she is just cold as the weather has changed.

Do you give dd water? This really helps with poo.
Teething will keep her awake use Bonjela or Nelson's Teetha which is a homeopathic remedy.

Have you tried Aptimal formula? It is meant to be the best.

Also throwing up and not sleeping through night are quite normal things for baby at this age as they are changing sooooo much.

Do you give dd fruit? cooked apple or pears. Bananas can sometimes aggravate consipation.

Hope some of this advice helps

My lo 8 month boy often burps up milk after a bottle - i wouldn't worry about it. Aptamil milk is good as it has prebiotics which apparently mean softer poos which would help. The waking at night sounds like your lo is hooked on her dummy and has sleep associations with it. ie she can't get back to sleep without it as all babies wake at night sometimes. maybe you should take it away, you will probably have to do some sleep training as well and it won't be easy - harder for you than her. Aston and Parsons are really good homeopathic teething remedy but fist in mouth doesn't necessarily mean teeth- babies put everything in their mouths.

if your lo wakes every hour and settles right away with a dummy, then I think the problem is the dummy, not hunger!!

Your lo is most likely using the dummy as a 'prop' to get to sleep. This is not a problem until your lo relies on it to get back to sleep every time she goes through a period of light sleep (roughly every 45 minutes, which would explain the hourly wakings). Rather than get back to sleep on her own your lo cries so that you will put it back for her.

You have a couple of options
1)ride it out until your lo is old enough to put the dummy back in her own mouth
2)wean the dummy - either do it gradually or go cold turkey. You may have a few bad nights but your lo should find her own way of self soothing that doesnt have to involve you

hope you work something out!

Thanks folks

With regards the fruit I give her it at least once a day, she won't do water but will take possibly 2oz of organic apple and grape juice (no sugar content) but this has not seemed to make much difference. I have been using Bonjela on her gums but may try the homeopathic remedy.
The dummy suggestions are interesting and I have decided to try to ween her of it - starting 2nite. Also went out today and bought a heavy sleepsuit. 2morrow I am going 2 change her formula.

Hopefully all these things considered I will have a few hours kip 2nite!! Down side (if you can call it that) is I may not know which one did the trick but who cares.

Really appreciate the advice. Will keep u posted and maybe I can return the favour

best fruit juice for constipation is prune juice but don't go mad - its very potent stuff. I should start with aptamil - for a week atleast to see any effect before trying prune juice. My lo was constipated when we started weaning but now we have no problems. good luck with the dummy removal it wil involve crying but just remember, she is learning to go to sleep by herself which is very very important. she may find her thumb which would be fantastic as she will be able to soothe herself whenever and she can't lose it!

i remember when i start to wean mine at 5 months and for the next 5 weeks, she was waking me up every nite for her bottle as she was hungry, so i thought it was down to teething as she had her fist in her mouth and slobbering alot.... she settled once i introduced another meal and then she start sleeping thru again (i thought why didnt i think of that!!) so you may need to give baba more milk (add on another 2oz).. but it may be the dummy and not the hunger... (mine hadnt got a dummy)....Deffo give some water to baba to ease the constipation.

Everything you have just said is normal as mine was exctly like that too!
