I think she is teething, but she has a crying fit at about 2am that lasts at least an hour, then she only sleeps for half an hour at a time until 6am. (then I get 2hrs till DD1 wakes up - yawn)

I give her calpol, i rock her, i jiggle, i offer the breast, I offer a bottle of milk, warm and cold, then water, then a snack, I sing, I put the tv on, I try to co sleep. Everythibng stops the crying for a minute while she is distracted, then she starts again, throwing herself about.

Any ideas? She used to sleep! She hardly naps as well - DD1 was a good sleeper who still sometimes has long 3 hr naps on top of her 12 hours of solid sleep. DD2 maybe gets 8 hours in 24. I get even less, and I am a naturally sleepy person.

Help me!

Sorry no advice here as I am in a very similar situation so watching your thread with interest to see what anyone else suggests. Also just know you aren't alone

GrumpyGit · 16/11/2010 22:38

Has she had a cold/ear infection? Just an idea, but we did have something similar with ds2 who had glue ear following an ear infection. Problems with sleep lasted long after the infection had gone - was eventually prescribed antibiotics for a long-lasting nose infection which the ENT specialist said was the cause of the glue ear (the tubes all being connected & blocked). Was brilliant when he did eventually get treated, but several gps missed it. Might be worth getting her checked out though? Fwiw we always found ibuprofen was more helpful than calpol

Sorry, meant to say good luck - lots of sympathy - think I became ultragrumpy when we were in the midst of it Grin

EvilEyeButterPie · 16/11/2010 22:40

Her big sister is on antibiotics atm for a cough, and the baby is all snotty and dribbly.

So should I call the GP do you think?

Up to you really - could see how it goes; might just be the snottiness stopping her breathing easily? How long has it been going on?

KickArseQueen · 16/11/2010 22:44

Yes , do! get the doc to check her ears, they missed an ear infection with my ds1 and he started having temp spikes that were uncontrollable. If left the ear drum can rupture and it can cause hearing problems get her checked asap. :)

Is it mad to be thinking of trying to sleep with her in her playpen? In the big bed wake up DH (who has a full time out of house job), in the kids room wakes up DD1, if I let the baby crawl in the front room she'll just climb up a bookcase or get stuck under the settee.

My other option is to turn the bedsettee into a bed, but I'll still be grabbing hold of her as she kamakazes off the sides, that is if I can stop her crying long enough even for that.

i'm off to bed now to get sleep before it all starts, but I'll come back on if I'm up in the night to read any suggestions, so keep them coming please :)

Been going on for a week or so. She has been unsettled for a month (since I had to rush over to Preston to be at my Grandads deathbed. I took her along but she got a bit passed from pillar to post while we where there and so lost what little sleep routine she had) but this crying is new, she seems in pain :(

TBH, I would check her temp, and if it was up at all I would ring out of hours.

look at the facts, she's your 2nd dc, and the circs are flagging up to you as "not right"

If she has no temp then I'd dose with nurofen, any temp OOH.

not worth leaving imo. Hope you all get lots of sleep :)

skandi1 · 16/11/2010 23:00

i would say ear infection. get gp to check her ears.

i suffered loads as a child inc grommets/glue ear. and i recall the agony still.

my dd who is 15 months has just been thru a monster teething patch where she got 4 molars in 2 weeks. calpol mostly did the trick otherwise nurofen for children and it would settle herand keep her calm and if it was at night she would go back to sleep once the effect kicked in.

if your dd was just teething i think she would settle and be comforted by the calpol.

i suppose your dd could have an ear infection and be teething too - poor girl.

hope you get her better soon.

EvilEyeButterPie · 16/11/2010 23:02

:( I used to get ear infections. They were horrible. OK, GPs in the morning. She is sleeping now, fingers crossed!

Bed now for me though.

Is it heat or cold to put on the side of her head to ease it if it is ear infection?

Sorry, didn't see this. AFAIK doing either can encourage a ruptured drum. Nurofen is excellent because its anti inflammatory. Hope she's ok :)
