Sleeping bag with higher tog than 2.5?

It can get to 14/15 degrees in our house at night at the moment. Do have central heating but not prepared to put it on through the night.

DS (12mo) is currently sleeping in a vest, fleecy sleepsuit & 2.5 tog sleeping bag. I also throw a blanket over him, but he always wriggles out of this.

I'm pretty sure he's getting chilly in the middle of the night which is not helping as he really doesn't need another reason to wake up at the moment!

When he (often) ends up in bed with me, he feels cool - not just hands and head, but when I put fingers down his back. And when he's in bed with me he snuggles up to me which I think is actually to get warm as well as for cuddles. Whilst quite lovely - I would really appreciate some decent stretches of sleep and do not appreciate having a dummy repeatedly stuck in my eye...

So - anyone know if you can you actually get baby sleeping bags with any higher togs?

TIA

I think you can get a 3 tog but have never seen them sold anywhere. What about some Pj's under or over the sleepsuit?

we were given a fantastic one by some friends in Canada. it's called Kangapouch and it's proper quilted duvet material with goose down inside, and a padded grobag top. DD loves it and it keeps her toasty on nights when it gets down to 14/15 degrees overnight (you know, the nights when the baby monitor beeps to tell you you are a terrible parent!!). her hands and nose are still cold to the touch, but the rest of her is toasty!

if you can track then down, they may be able to send you one.

on nights when its in the wash i layer DD up with vest, baby grow and this woolen all-in-one from Jojomamabebe with a 2.5 tog grobag over the top (takes ages)... good job it doesn't need to be washed often!!

good luck :)

here's the link :)

We gave DD a duvet (4 tog) when she got to 1.She was very cosy in her cot. This is the earliest they are recommended.

It depends though if your DS is a wriggler as to whether he stays under it or not!

Get a small oil fired radiator to keep his room just a bit warmer - 16 or 17 degrees should be fine.

Seona1973 · 17/11/2010 08:07

put a cardigan on him? Grobags are designed to be lightweight so you are unlikely to find a higher tog than 2.5/3tog

snugglejunkie · 17/11/2010 20:14

Ooo those kangapouches look fab. Pricey shipping though!

He ended up in bed with me at 1.30am last night. He was in a cotton sleepsuit under a fleecey sleepsuit & in a 2.5 sleeping bag. I took him out his sleeping bag and he snuggled up right next to me and pulled the duvet over him! Frankly I think it's all a ruse to ultimately kick me & DH out so he can have the nig bed Wink

I guess I just need to keep searching - and mega layering him up.

My DS is in a vest, cotton sleepsuit and 2.5 tog bag? Is that not likely to be warm enough then at 15degrees? It's so hard to know.

muslimah28 · 17/11/2010 22:22

wow kangapouches are expensive, and not just the shipping!

ds has been suffering too when we stayed at my mums for a few days, her house gets really really cold, but for somereason he's been cold even when my baby monitor tells me its 20 degrees. i had 5 layers on him plus a sleeping bag at my mums and i felt his chest and back in the middle of the night when he woke and he was still cold!

do you think it's safe to use two sleeping bags (with less clothing layers then). sorry if that's a silly question Blush, it just occured to me earlier today...

Seona1973 · 17/11/2010 22:23

my 2 slept fine in a vest, sleepsuit and 2.5tog bag - their room got down to 14 degrees in the winter. Are you using long sleeved vests?

DullWomenHaveImmaculateHomes · 18/11/2010 08:05

I've got a 4 tog sleeping bag for 6-12 months from mothercare. Bit nervous about using it though.

mumof3boys01 · 18/11/2010 11:56

Think i have seen 3 tog sleeping bags on kiddicare.com sorry do not know how to link.

muslimah28 · 18/11/2010 19:01

i just found this range of sleeping bags which include 3.5tog.

they also do a merino wool sleeping bag which they say doesn't have a tog rating becuase the natural merino regulates the baby's body temperature.

am not sure between the two. am also worried about whether i'm not worrying enough (iyswim) about putting ds in a very warm sleeping bag, from teh posts above. i know about the risks of cotdeath with warm rooms, and aim to keep the room not far off the optimum 16-18 degrees. it was just horrible though tht night, the room was soo hot as we kept the heating on all night, but i felt ds's chest and back and he was still cold and wouldn't settle.

he was recovering from a cold last week but was over it so i don't think that was the reason but of course can't be sure.

anyone else had this, a very cold baby in a warm room?

i will probably still buy one of these so that at least we don't have to keep the heating on all night when we're at my mums!

NellyTheElephant · 18/11/2010 20:25

My DS's room is absolutely freezing (all a bit of a nightmare at the moment - no heating, roof leaking, thin walls with no insulation etc). He is in a 2.5 tog grobag but I put a cot duvet over him too. Although he is quite a wriggler I do find that if I tuck it over him well once he is asleep it tends to stay on. Rather then throwing a blanket over him, use a slightly larger one and tuck it very securely under the mattress one side of him, once he is asleep you can tuck the other side very securely too and you'll probably find that he doesn't manage to wriggle out.

Orissiah · 19/11/2010 09:19

I know this sounds strange but as he's snuggling well in your bed and even pulling the duvet over him do you think that a) he might be ready for his own bed or b) can you give him a cot duvet and get rid of the GroBag? He may get more warm and cosy if he can snuggle into a duvet?

snugglejunkie · 19/11/2010 12:08

He's certainly not ready for his own bed, little wrigglist, he'll end up on the opposite side of the room!

However I am now thinking about getting a cot duvet. I've just found a 2.5 tog padded sleepsuit from mothercare so if I put him in that and give him a duvet, then he can wriggle out if he's too hot and snuggle under if he's chilly.

Well, that's the theory... guess a trip to the shops is in order and we'll see how it goes!

We use a Purflo which has sleeves and keeps dd toastie. They're small for size IYKWIM - our 3-9 month one won't see dd beyond 6 months at current growth rates! Not sure what their largest size is, but loads of stockists - easily found on google! Good luck.
