my 13 month old boy(next week) had alwayd been a good sleeper==well in a sling-he has bad asthma and had breathing problems upyo june so is used ti having naps in sling. he has been on same sleeping pattenr roughly for months- woken by his brother 630 (prob wouls naturally sleep to 7) nap about 915 (after school run) for about 1.5-2 hours. afternoon nap 130 for about 40 mins to an hour.
recently he has not been falling asleep for his afternoon nap-ive tried making it later etc but it doesnt help-tried puahing him in pram-still not fall asleep- we pick his brother up at 3 then its non stop til 600 when its bed.(his brother wakes him if in pushchair etc)
he doesnt moan in the day when tired and doesnt get grumpy but nights are shocking and he is obviously overtired-waking every sleep cycle!!
to get to sleep at night initially he breastfeeds then i put him in cot and he falls to sleep himslef- on 2nd or 3rd waking he starts coughing and has been sick coughing recently- we then cosleep til monring.
my questions-he really loves his morning sleep how do i extend his awake time so he can have one sleep??
strategies needed-times etc
is is a develpomentla thing-teeth?
i will get him out the sling-please dont beat me up about it!

There is a developmental leap around 13 months...

However I'd suggest cutting short his morning nap to 30-45 mins and putting him down for a lunch time one after a nice big lunch. Then gradually push back the morning nap by 15 mins every few days so he eventually has just one after lunch?

My DS is a similar age and has a short morning nap and longer post lunch one. Sometimes he fights the morning one. Other times he'll sleep longer in the morning and I'll wake him up otherwise he has a short lunch nap then can't last until bedtime!

What time does he have lunch? Try lunch at 12ish, nap at 1ish?

Igglybuff · 15/11/2010 16:39

Sorry wake him up after about 45 mins in the morning. It might take a few days to work though!

hi i tried yesterday- nap at 915 woke him up at 10- he was fine but when it came to his afternoon nap he couldnt seem to switch off-started trying at 1- breast feeding- he kept screwing his eyes up but wouldnt sleep until 230-luckily he transferred to his pushchair and remained asleep for 40 minutes (very rare!).
but that meant he had only had under 2 hours nap sleep in the day and so woke at 40 minutes at night, then aftert another 40 minutes then got in with me (we cosleep).

today he is currently asleep now-i'll wake just after 10.then try for afternoon nap 1 ish? is that enough awake active time?

Can you keep him awake longer in the morning ? Maybe try keeping him up until 10ish and gradually push it out later.. Give him an extra snack or feed before he goes down so he's not waking because of hunger (as presumably his lunch would be a bit late if he slept the full 2 hours)

I remember when dd did the transition from 2-1 nap at a similar age. For a couple of months she didn't have a lunch as such - she had a decent snack before she went for her nap (at around 11) and another snack when she woke up at 1.30 ish. We also had to put her down to bed a little bit earlier. She then stretched to just one nap straight after lunch at 12.30.

i ll try for 2 naps today and tomorrow-if no luck then i will try and push the morning nap a bit later- he loves his monring nap!
how long would you say he could last without getting over tired from end of nap to bedtime.
if i put him for morning nap at 10 and he sleeps to 12 then thats 12upto 6 plus!seems a long stretch-he wouldnt really complain but would prob wake loads at night form being over tired.
thanks for help

I found that once dd was down to one nap, it would be longer. So, if you can manage to get your ds to go until 10.30-11am, he may (eventually !) go for 2.5-3 hours so that he is awake at 1.30-2pm, which isn't then too much of a stretch until 6. DD would sometimes have a 10 minute cat nap in the car late afternoon if we were out and about.

The trouble at the moment is that your ds is already overtired from the last few days/nights of not much sleep so I would be tempted to just let him have as long as he wants in the morning until he's caught up a bit. Will he sleep in the car ? Could you go for a quick drive (assuming you can obviously) at 2 ish so he can a bit extra ?

Igglybuff · 16/11/2010 19:35

Maybe you could try and put him down for his lunch time nap a little earlier as he might be too tired to last until 1? then push back as he gets used to it?

enimod · 16/11/2010 20:00

just found out he has tonsillitas-or however you spell it-so it could be this! i think you might be right- today he went to sleep about 920 i woke him 1015ish and we went to a fit tots session-at 12 he was yawning-he wouldnt eat his dinner either. i then tried for a nap at 1 onwards- he didnt fall to sleep until 230ish-
i think i missed his sleep and should have dived in there at 12.
tomorrow i think im just going to let him sleep as long as he wants in the morning considering he is now diagnosed with tonsilitas. and play it by ear from there on.
its just i get nothing done when trying to juggle his naps as he is mainly breastfed ti sleep and mainly will only sleep at home!!

Poor thing! I hope he gets better soon and makes sense to just let him sleep.
