Anyone had any luck with sleep trainer clocks?

My DS1 has just turned 2 and has been getting up at 5am for months. We've tried later bedtime, shorter nap, a bit of letting him cry it out, all to no avail. He isn't sleeping late enough, he gets tired and grumpy a couple of hours later, and isn't really cheerful until after his nap.

I've been reading rave reviews for the gro clock on Amazon and wondered if this is worth a try. He's only just 2, so am not sure if he'll "get it"

I'd really appreciate hearing about others' experiences with sleep trainer clocks, particularly with 2 year olds.

We got a Gro Clock for DS when he was 2.5 and it worked a treat. It's not instantaneous and you have to be firm as you are teaching him how to use it but it definitely worked for us.

There's nothing to 'get' really. When you out him to bed, you read the little book it comes with and at the point where the sun winks and goes to bed, you set the clock and the yellow sun on the dial winks and turns into a blue moon. The stars round the edge will then disappear one by one in even increments until they are all gone then the sun wakes up again and the dial turns bright yellow. As long as he can tell the difference between the two pictures, then he'll be fine.

For the first few days, he will still wake and get up early but if you are firm and make sure he stays in his room/in bed until the sun comes up then he'll get it eventually.

Good luck

I had a similar one for DD1 (bunny clock). It worked a treat (compliant child). I have NO doubt that it will cut NO sway with DD2 (obstinate child). I also think they need to be nearer 3 to have any hope of 'getting' it.

We are using the Gro clock with DD, only 17mo. It is helping - she understands that she's not allowed to come to mummy for her milk until the sun is there...unfortunately she can't always manage to wait so sometimes still calls for me but it's generally not until a few minutes before the sun now. I think she tries to wait if she wakes early, but hasn't yet got the patience Grin
We were getting a lot of waking at about 3.30am and crying for me, but haven't had this since we got the clock. I think she does look at it and realises that its still night so goes back to sleep.
Not an unmitigated success yet but she is very young for it so overall I'm pretty pleased and think it will get better with time.

My only worry is what we will do when we go camping if we start to depend on it!

I'd really recommend the kidsleep clock.

I researched loads and loads and this was the one we chose.

It's just a sleeping/waking lamb no numbers or anything. It has to be out of DDs reach as she tried to adjust it but now she completely 'gets' it. She's 2.9yo. It has the advantage of making no noise so she has slept past the allowed wake up time which was marvellous!

Good luck!

We have the Gro Clock here, ds is 2.9, he still comes in but easily goes back to his room when I ask if the sun is up yet and stays there because its mummy and daddy who cant get up till the sun is up, we cant force him to go back to sleep he is just an early riser.

One thing - how long did you try to put him to bed later for? i started doing half an hour later but it took a good 4-5 days for it to kick in to the morning.

We had the bunny clock for DD1 (nearly 3). She understood it no problem and it was all going well until I went into her room one night at 3am and found her sat in her chair sobbing because she was waiting for bunny's ears to pop up and she wasn't allowed to come and see mummy. I don't know how long she had been sitting there getting into a state but I stopped using the clock after that - it was so Sad.

We have the groclock. DS was 2.5 when we bought it. I was a bit dubious but it has worked a treat. It took a little perserverence but DS quickly got the idea. He now waits for 'sunny' to come out. We started out trying to get him to 6am then we kept extending by half hours. He is now at 7.30am! Yay.

7.30????

Thanks all. We're currently in an experimental week of shorter naps (waking him up after one hour instead of letting him sleep for 2 hours+, as it seems the long nap is his way of catching up after the early start)combined with half and hour later bedtime. Was seeming to work, we had a few 6ams, but today was back to 5.15.

I now have a sleep clock. I was going to get the gro clock, but we aren't in the UK and there wasn't a battery option (different voltage sends clocks haywire) This one has a blue face that turns yellow at waking up time. Will trial it tonight.

Very jealous of 7.30! We also have DS2 (10 weeks), who has night feeds so in order to get enough sleep I go to bed at 9. It'd be so nice to have a bit more evening....
