Should I be waking my newborn to feed?

Hi all,

I have a quick q re my 11 day old DS. First baby, so hope this isn't a daft q! DS has been feeding at 11pmish, then takes until about 1amish to go down again. He then doesn't wake for the next feed until 6ish. Nice for DH and I to have the extended sleep time, but I'm worried that DS should be feeding more and whether we should wake him for this? He's mix fed via bottles as we've had a horrendous time gettting him to latch (long story) and is putting on weight well - has just passed his birth weight. Am I worrying about nothing here? BTW I do fully realise that this 'routine' is likely to change!!

Thanks!

Bumping for you.

I'm not at all qualified to advise but if your DS is putting on weight and isn't dehydrated (plenty of wet nappies), I'd be inclined to enjoy the sleep while you can (as yoy say, it could all change at the next growth spurt, unfortunately) and be vv thankful for such an amazing baby.

But there are lots of more experienced people on here who will hopefully respond soon.

Thanks scroobious, nappies are fine and he is honing the talent of peeing all oveer us at change time too, so no worry re dehydration. I guess I should be grateful and cross my fingers that it continues!

I've had this, ds is 13 days old and I was told to wake them if they go over six hours. I was told this by the Doc on the maternity ward after I questioned them on it.

NEVER WAKE A SLEEPING BABY [WINK]

In all seriousness I remember my MW saying for the first few weeks if they sleep longer than 4 hours.
Ask your health visitor/midwife.

my wink failed :(

I would say if it's during the night don't wake him....it sounds like he's all set to be a good night sleeper. Setting an alarm would be insane (IMHO)

Does he feed a lot during the day? If so, he will be fine to go this long during the night.

Do you wake him at 11pm to feed him, or is he demanding it?

I've got a 16 day old who will sometimes sleep for five hours. When my milk came I was very engorged and got mastitis then thrush. Because of this I was advised not to let him go more than three hours.I adhere to this in the day but not at night. In short I would say that if you and your boobs are fine leave it, just watch out for signs of infection. Typing this one handed while feeding so hope it makes sense x

Thanks all. He is waking to feed at 11pm, and feeds 3hrlyish during the day. I agree, the idea of waking him seems mad! Will let him sleep and be happy with the rest - now if I could only get him to settle in the moses basket during the day...
