Here's a new one: sleeping too much?

Is there auch a thing as too much sleep? DS is 15 months - he sleeps 11-12 hours at night and has two naps during the day. Morning nap about an hour but will sometimes go up to two and afternoon nap at least two - I usually wake him after two hours so don't know how long he would go if I left him.

Just want to get a handle on whether this is a lot or just a bit more than average? Am I doing the right thing waking him from his afternoon nap or should I just leave him?

My DS loves his sleep. At that age he had just dropped morning nap but would sleep 2.5-3 hours at lunchtime. I rarely woke him unless we had to be somewhere. He only ever went over 3 hours if he was ill - did 4 once!

It never affected his night time sleep (11-12 hours, albeit with occasional wakings) so I let him get on with it.

Now at 2.7 he still has a 2 hour afternoon nap - he just seems genetically predisposed to like sleep (his cousins both had naps until 3yrs+! I'm not complaining as many of my friends have had toddlers who won't sleep in the day beyond 18 months and don't get any respite, whereas I get time to do jobs and put my feet up with a cuppa or have a nap myself or feed DD (5 wks) without toddler trying to pull her off the boob!

Really hoping DD is the same!

If it's not affecting his nighttime sleep then I would not worry. Enjoy it while it lasts.

My DS1 is 3 and still has a 2 hr nap. He will go without some days if we are out for the day, but his behaviour gets awful, so I encourage him to nap every day. As megonthemoom says it gives me a chance to get things done or have a rest. Definitely don't discourage it.
