21 months & TERRIBLE sleeper - CC or drop nap?

Girls...please share your wisdom and tips! My son is 21 months and was an angel sleeper - from 12 weeks to 12 months he slept through. Then he got recurring tonsillitis and after weeks of not settling, cuddles in the night etc, he is terrible at nodding off.

Bed times have become a bit of a battle...he is up and down, in and out of bed (he's in a big bed now which did improve things for a while) and it can take me an hour of sitting next to his bed stroking his head for him to nod off. He just wants to climb out of bed and onto my lap for cuddles. Very sweet but not good for me or him. He also wakes a bit in the night and can't settle himself back to sleep.

He's extremely stubborn and will cry if I leave the room. He'll cry so hard he wretches. I know its a tired cry and he often puts it on but it's a cry and I can't ignore it.

I have been thinking about putting a stair gate onto his door and leaving him to cry. After 5 mins, pop him back into bed etc. I KNOW with him it could take 2-3 hours...seriously. But a few nights of this might just break it.

What should I do? Any experienced sleepless mummies of toddlers out there who can help????

Also - when do toddles drop their daytime nap? When he naps for longer than an hour in the day, going to bed is even worse? God forbid - but should I drop his daytime nap?!!!?? Or just try getting tough first?

my sympathies to you! I am going through the same thing!

Tried the controlled crying night before last and it went on for 2.5hrs with not let up.

Have stumbled across some advice saying start by sitting next to bed for them to drop off, then week by week move a little further.

Going by the forums my little one is particularly head strong as I could easily put her back to bed 60 times in 1 min.

If I were you i'd cut his naps shorter first and let him sleep no later than 3 - 3:30 ish.

DS1 dropped his day nap at around this age sorry to ssay! But, i insisted on quiet time in his room or cot instead.

DS2 won't sleep properly if I let him have too much sleep in day so i let him have an hour and a half at most. He's 15 months ish.

I'm don't like CC myself but we do let ds' moan for a bit. It's the screaming I can't cope with. But, I know it's sometimes a godsend for some people. (i will try it when II'm braver and if i really need to!)

Thank you!

WowOoo - his daytime nap is generally from 12.30 to 2...we wake him at 2 if he's still asleep. I'm just wondering if he's one of those kids that needs less sleep - he's never grumpy if he gets less...always an angel in the daytime.

Foxy - poor you! I've tried the retreating method but he's so god damn headstrong too that I think it would take me 6 months of it that I need a quicker fix!

I think we might try a bit of the crying thing and retreat method...I think I need to wean him off me as that's all he wants. A bit of tough love required I think.

ARGH - looking forward to an evening sitting in his bedroom for hours!
