Newborn sounds like she's choking / being sick all night!

This is my first question post-pregnancy on MN!

DD now 5 days. We've had 2 nights since my milk came in and she seems really sicky when laid back down to sleep flat, and seems to puke most of the feed back up down her neck. We tried the last couple of feeds holding her so she's not flat for 5-10m after feeding finished to let it 'go down' and that has meant longer gaps between feeds, which is fab.

However, although she seems to be fast asleep and not distressed, her breathing when flat in basket is really noisy and gurgly like she's constantly bringing stuff up and nearly choking. It seems to be worse for me than her though!

Is this normal, and shes just going to be a super noisy sleeper! I'll ask the midwife later but was hoping to get some ideas of what to try!

Congrats on your dd Smile

It could possibly be reflux, when babies bring up lots of their feed - or it could just be a normal baby thing, some of them are quite sicky.

My dd has reflux but is quite uncomfortable with it, some babies with reflux aren't really upset by it - "happy chuckers" - and no real treatment is needed, just precautions like having a cloth over your shoulder to catch any spills and sick.

If you search on here you'll find lots of threads about symptoms of reflux - though like I say it could just be normal baby sicky-ness. Your mw should definitely be able to help. Holding the baby upright for about 30 mins after each feed is one of the many things that can help (to help the feed be digested before you lay the baby flat)

Sounds like reflux - my DS did this in the early days. Keep on holding her upright between feeds to let it go down, for at least 20 mins as you have been - I had to do this.

You can also prop up the head end of the moses basket with books so it's on a slight incline (under the basket not the mattress).

Watch out for any other signs as she gets older e.g. wriggling/discomfort during a feed, wet acidic smelling burps, writhing in her sleep - this could indicate she's not a happy chucker and the reflux bothers her. Then take her to the GP. Otherwise just keep a watch on things for now.
