Hi,

OI dont know if anyone else has had this experience..

My DS is 3 months old. He sleeps OK, often 5+hrs to begin, but he then wakes up multiple times because he is trying to poo or pass wind. Only way to settle him is to nurse.

Heisnt constipated: he is ebf and the poos are runny.

I wold love an advice, as I think better sleep is within grasp if we could improve this one problem.

Thx

Don't really have any advice but my DS always wakes up to poo, sometimes getting quite upset. He's always had quite runny poo's and they can sound quite explosive sometimes. We just put it down to him being a greedy baby and guzzling his milk (he's also bfed)

My DS is also 3 months old, also sleeps around 5 hours EBF and wakes to poo or pass wind .... however, normally if I leave him to get on with it (it always wakes me up though) he will resettle himself after 5 minutes of moaning and grumbling.

At first when he woke with wind I jumped in too fast to pick him up trying to prevent him from screaming and waking DH but that woke him up properly. Does he wake up and scream or just grumble? Maybe I'm just lucky.

Thx, sounds like this is pretty normal, except that my little boy doesn't self-settle when he wakes (mph! naps area whole nother issue for me), so he tries to poo, wakes, yells for me, and that is the end of my sleep.

Ah well, one day it will improve. I was wondering is anyone had tried giving bubs water (most people say not necessary...) or any other tactics to help him learn how to figure it out a bit better.

Where is he sleeping atm?

I was co-sleeping until very recently, I started moving him further and further away from me in the bed while he was still awake after feeding but so he could still see, hear and smell me and he began to learn to self settle. Now he's in a moses basket next to our bed with the head of the mattress raised so he can still see me..... and he can still self settle.

Next phase will be to move him so he cant see me but is still in the same room and then into his crib in another room but still in the moses basket and eventually into the crib itself.... thats the theory anyway! Yet to see if it will work but I much prefer the gradual learning to the cry it out or more harsh methods.

I think the main problem you need to address is the self settling rather than the wind causing the waking as they will always wake for some reason or another and if they can self settle it will be much easier on you in the future! :)

Jazmyn,

thanks for your reply. Hes always been in the Moses basket next to our bed. He has self settled once or twice if I leave him to have a moan, but mostly he will break into a full howl. Also my husband doesnt like to leave him cry...

with pooing tho I'm not sue he will as e finds the hole pocess quite an effort.

This happened to my dc. She definitely went through a phase where she thought pooing and farting were the worst things ever and involved lots of crying and screaming. I guess that when they are small this is the only way they can express that something is happening. One day she learnt to grunt and now she does this instead of screaming. Its quite useful as we know when she's about to poo and also doesn't keep us up at night so much. She also has seemed to stop pooing at night. We found that sitting her in her bouncer helped her poo so we give her 20 mins in it before bed and if there's anything to come out...

Don't think I have ever mentioned poo so much in one post!

Jingesticks - that is soooo funny. we have had exatly the same experience including screaming now grunting, and the magic bouncy chair for pooing! Every morning at 7ish it works without fail.
Problem is his 1-2am feed seems to get things moving and at 3am he wakes to poo.

I will try getting him to spend moe time in the bouncy chair befre bed...

12 hrs seems to be a long time between poos for him, therein lies our problem.
