Pillows...If & when?

DS has just turned one & is struggling with a bit of the snuffles at the mo. He seems to be able to fall asleep propped up on me & it got me to wondering whether he would be more comfortable with a pillow in his cot.
I know guidlines say no pillows before 12 months, but now that he is a year, should I try one?
I'd be interested to know what made other people try using pillows & when they introduced them (& of course if they were popular.)

Thanks. x

Bumping out of interest. I was going to ask the same question!

DS is almost 2 and doesn't use a pillow. His head is still so big in comparison to his body I can't see that he would need one, but mainly, he wriggles around so much I doubt he would stay on it!

However I have put a folded cotton blanket under his head when he had a cold in the past and it helped him breathe/sleep so I would give it a try if you think it might help. A thin one is probably better than a brand new puffy one, maybe an old pillow? Or ikea do some cot sized pillows which are quite thin.

Fab, Thanks bertie.
I think i'll try the folded blanket thing first.

I'm not sure if it would help for the snuffly nose but we started dd (16mo) with a pillow in her cot recently, when I noticed that she was using her soft toy as one. It has been BRILLIANT because it has stopped a lot of the wriggling around - in particular it has stopped her crashing her head against the cot bars and waking herself up.

Also she does seem to love it and snuggles down in it which is very cute.

Thanks aquavit, what sort of pillow did you go for? (& where did you gat it?)

I just used one of our down ones (she's not allergic to it, it turns out!) because it's quite flat. I didn't think about it all that much! We've just been away and she had a different kind - foam I think, also quite flat - she seemed happy with that too.

DD started using a very small cot pillow from Ikea at about 11 months. I had not intended her to start using it that early but she cut her face on the side she normally lies on so I thought a soft pillow would be more comfortable for her.

The Ikea pillow did not survive being washed very well. It went rather lumpy. So DD now has a fatter pillow from Mothercare. She is 2.5 and her head does seem to stay on the pillow all night.

My elder 2 had pillows from age 1, mothercare ones.

I'd put a book or two under the end of her cot to help the snuffles and perhaps some olbas oil or similar in the room

Thanks all.
I have been using a vapour thing, & it does help a little, but he still seems to prefer being propped up a bit. when he was very small & had a cold, i put a rolled up towel under the matress which helped, it was just that this time it made me start thinking about pillows for a comfort thing too.
