Controlled crying is where you put DS to bed after a proper bedtime routine eg, bath (if he has one at night) milk, cleaning teeth. It doesn't really matter what your particular routine is, just that he will learn that with that chain of events, the next step is bed. Pop him into bed, read a story, then explain that it's time for sleep, give a kiss then leave. If he stands up crying or not (I assume he is still in a cot!) go in after a few mins and say quietly, 'lie down it's time for sleep' tuck him in and leave. You have to keep doing this but leaving longer intervals between going in. ie The next time 5 mins then 10 etc etc. Staying calm throughout (can get very stressful, hearing them cry) Anyway, after a few nights they normally get the hang of it and go to sleep straight away.

I did this with DS also at 13 months. He was also still waking in the night for a drink. With controlled crying he learn't how to go to sleep on his own and also stopped waking in the night And afterwards he and me were alot happier for getting some proper sleep.

It does work, I think i'm gonna have to do this again when dd gets rid of this nasty cold.

with my ds I had to gently push him down when he stood up, because if I picked him up he would think i was taking him downstairs, and would scream when I put him back down.

When you go in, don't say anything, just shush, and don't switch the lights on.
