Baby thrashing about all night, no decent sleep at all

Hi my baby is 16 weeks today and has gone from doing 4 hours, 3 hours, 3 hours (generally) at night to being up every hour or two hours to feed. He will not go back to sleep unless I feed him! In between these feeds his sleep is quite disturbed and he thrashes around a lot. I have to pat his back to keep him asleep this long. He is also much harder to settle in his bed and wants to sleep between us (which I wouldn't mind if it wasn't for the thrashing around). He has been like this for over 2 weeks now and I am seriously wrecked.
Have tried gripe water and infacol. He sleeps in an amby. We have black out blinds. He has a dummy but is not interested in it at night. Have bought him a sleepytot comforter but maybe he is a bit young for this to work. During the day I make sure he naps reasonably well if at all possible (this involves driving/walking/feeding him to sleep).
What is wrong? What can I do?
On another note, i find it really hard to nap during day when he is asleep. I find myself getting stressed thinking I must go to sleep now, I need sleep. Anyone got any tips on how to nap during the day?

Oh, this happened to me, with DS who is now 4. He went from a reasonably good sleeper to waking every 2 hours and it was killing me. He was desperate for food, so I weaned him at 17 weeks - baby rice and banana mainly. After I weaned him, it took a little while to settle down again, but it came eventually. My HV was very supportive. Also, DS was on 91st centile so very big for his age and needed the calories.

teething? it can be very painful in the night. have you tried a calpol one night and see if this gives him a longer sleep session. thrashing about does seem to indicate something does not feel right.

Hi Goodname - did you get anywhere with solving the cause of the thrashing? My DD (16 weeks yesterday) has just started doing this - but weirdly only at night - and it's keeping me up and making her grumpy. I've started feeding more often - she was going 5 hours between feeds at night, now it seems to be 3 maximum. I thought maybe it was wind, but she's never had a problem with it before... And she isn't dribbling like she has been, so I think the teeth have settled for a bit.. Any ideas? thanks!
