Cot bumpers?? Waking due to face against cot bars!

Hi,

My DD is 11 weeks old. This week for the first time she has gone from 7pm to 6am between feeds. She has done this 3 nights in a row. However, she wakes a couple of times during the night as she can roll on to her side and ends up with her face pressed against the bars of the cot and her arms stuck through them. She only needs to be moved back to the middle and goes straight back to sleep. However, because she can go through the night without feeding it would be great if we could prevent the problem of her squashing herself into the bars!

I have read that you shouldn't use cot bumpers because she could end up pressing her face into it and suffocating.

Does anyone have any advice on this? How can I stop her from ending up squashed into the side of the cot and are cot bumpers a total no-no?

Any tips or advice much appreciated. Thanks.

Hi embem.

TBH, I'm as in the dark as you are with cot bumpers. I've read you shouldn't use them until the baby can lift their head unaided or roll over, but then I've also read you shouldn't use them once baby can sit up unaided, so does that mean you only have a 1 month window when you can use them ?!? Although we co-slept to start with, by 5 months when DD was in her own cot, I used to lie her lengthways in the cot on her side with her back against a pillow and a blanket rolled like a long sausage tucked under her arm so she was draped over it. It stopped her rolling over and waking herself up. Smile.

Good luck!

Hi. I think there was a thread on here a week or ago about cot bumpers. Someone posted a link to some research that showed cot bumpers aren't as 'bad' as first thought. Have a look back and see if you can find it. Sorry to be a bit vague but it's still a bit early for me!

DS (5.5 months) has a cot bumper that goes round half of the cot. He rolls around like a crazy one during his sleep these days. Although he sometimes end up facing the bumper, he seems to have the sense to turn his head the other way when he does. I generally now put him down at one side of the cot (rather than in the middle), so he has room to roll and not end up face jammed up against the side of the cot.

He's had the bumper from birth by the way, as they're pretty popular out here (Belgium) and no one ever told me there was any danger to them....

I had this problem and solved it with one of these Airwrap bumpers - absolutely brilliant; breathable and stopped ds getting his legs stuck between the bars too

Thanks everyone - i'll check out those other threads and also look at the Airwrap bumpers. Seems like a very good idea! Was up again 3 times last night as she kept banging her head on the bars!!

If baby is big/strong enough to roll then you'll be fine with cot bumpers. If baby can't breathe properly he/she will simply roll and move.
