dummy and sleep...is there a way to stop the connection?

my 6 month old baby has been using a dummy to go to sleep, well she uses the dummy practically all the time, has a real oral fixation... I dont mind it anymore as it seems to really comfort her.

However she has started waking in the night after sleeping through since 8 weeks. She wakes and I have to put the dummy back in...and won't settle without it..

so now 3 times a night I am rushing to the cot to get the dummy back in. soon we would like to move her to own room, but am not looking forward to this same problem...

any suggestions of how to break this habit?

DS was a really sucky baby, and we found early on that he was into comfort sucking (BFing for an hour but not actually taking any milk, etc).

We are still using the dummy for sleep at 17 mo. We have managed to eradicate it at all other times (I'm the weak one that gets tempted to shove it in when DS throws a tantrum).

My DW's plan is to replace dummy with a "best friend toy". So since ~14 mo DS has been sleeping and napping with a toy giraffe picked up on a visit to the local zoo.

Your sudden waking in the night could be due to a development surge. Any teething going on? (if DS starts waking regularly in the night, teething is usually somewhere involved).

We had the same problem. We got a Sleepytot Baby Comforter and it worked brilliantly, almost overnight. You put the dummies on it so they can find it themselves. I've seen lots of other recommendations on mumsnet for Sleepytot too. :)
