i dropped the sides and let DS climb out when he started doing it, he was smearing the contents every where as well!!

its a sign he is bored I think, it stopped as soon as he could come and get us when he woke up

.....and a sleep bag like this one

The good ones have the zip the "worng" way round to make it even less obvious to the child - not sure if this example does.

You do it with clothes. That was the only way I found - at this point she was wearing pyjamas but we wnet back to vests and sleepsuits.

he can unzip his grobag and had removed his shorts too...

hadn't thought of putting clothes on backwards tho! [grin}

Over here (Belgium) typically sleepsuits do up down the back and across the bum. I had always thought this was a right pain (especially when trying to change newborn nappies in the night), but I'm beginning to see that there may be an advantage to them :)

Perhaps see if you can get some sleepsuits like that? They're the norm in France too, so I'm guessing you might be able to get hold of them online....

Just to clarify what I'm talking about - they're ones like these that Vertbaudet sell.
