Hi,I want to move my 2year & 5 month old into his first big boy bed and was wondering if anyone has tips for buying said "bed"? Have been drawn to guest beds with pull out mattress for the unsettled nights so he doesn't end up in our bed....thanks.

Ikea do really good toddler beds (some with rails if he's likely to fall out and others which get longer with said toddler). You could always put the mattress in your bedroom if you think this might be a problem.

Don't get a 'toddler' bed unless you don't have the space for a normal single, or have loads of lazy cash sitting around. They are just unnessesary. I think the bed with the trundle (pull out) bed underneath sounds like a great idea - perfect for sleepovers in the future too.

Two of my dc were in 'proper' single beds by their second birthday, dd was too tiny to get in and out of a normal single, but was toilet trained at 21mo so we got her a 'toddler bed' so she could get herself in and out to go to the toilet at night. Both options work well, imho. Only thing I'd say is get a good [breathable] fitted sheet, like the hippychick ones or similar, for when if there are accidents - not only wee ones, all the spilled drinks / sick / whatever that the little treasures bring our way Hmm
Don't get any of the 'character' things that look like a car / train / whatever, because that's a toy to play in and not a bed to be slept in ... friends have made this mistake many times! (not that you were thinking of this - but hey)
Just make sure your LO can get in and out of the bed (sounds obvious, but check!)

Thanks everyone for your tips and sorry for tardiness of my reply.

My top tip for new beds - roll up a towel lengthwise and tuck under the mattress on the open side of the bed - angles the mattress back ever so slightly so he's less likely to fall out of bed.
