Which cot sheet?

Hi! My husband and I are expecting our first babies - fraternal twins - in a few weeks. I've done some preparation in between working full-time. Got all the clothes I need for the next few months.

However, I am still struggling with the cot sheets and wonder if anyone can shed some light into:

  • what is the best fabric to use? cotton, jersey, flannel?
  • do I need a top fitted sheet, bottom sheet and a waterproof sheet/pad in between the two?

Thanks in advance.

I would defeinitely get a fitted bottom sheet.

I wouldn't have thought you'd need a waterproof sheet at this stage though. Just for when night time potty training isn't it? May be wrong here, sorry.

Are you planning on using sleeping backs or top bedding? That will determine what other sheets you'd need.

I will use cotton or flanel, fitted botom sheet, a big bath towel to put between the matress and the cot (most mattress come protected with a plastic cover which makes some children very sweaty sothe towel helps a bit).

I would forget about top bedding, if you end up with slightly active babies, they will be getting under or out of them in less than 3 months. Get a couple of grobags instead, much more practical IMO.

Best of luck and many congratulations.

Thanks for your quick responses. I plan to swaddle the babies for first couple weeks or so. I bought some sleeping bags already but may still be slightly big for newborns so I plan to use it later on.

I read that sleeping bags are best and won't need any additional blankets for fear of the babies overheating.

YEs that's true, Grobags (the original ones also come with a thermoter that tell you what to use under them depending on the house temp.

I half swaddled DS for a couple of weeks, after that he started kicking the blanketd or even found him with his legs hanging from the rails! The sleeping bag was sooooooo welcomed!

agree with everything everyone has said. We did find the waterproof sheet useful for catching sick!

Get a couple of white cotton cot sheets (per baby) for swaddling. However, if your baby doesn't like swaddling (as my first didn't) there's just nothing you can do about it. My second adored being swaddled, and now he's into grobags I'm afraid he still goes to bed overdressed cos he loves being as snuggly as possible (while the first lies over the top of his duvet in just a nappy!).

I didn't / don't have a waterproof sheet on the cot matress, but ours has a removable washable bit (which reminds me, should wash soon! )

When DS was newborn, I would put a extra piece of brushed cotton sheet under his head as a dribble cloth. Then if he was a bit sick, it saved having to change the whole sheet (v. useful for the middle of the night).

I prefer the jersey sheets, much softer. We've got fitted bottom sheets, and then flat sheets and cellular blankets for on top. DS overheats in a grobag, even the lowest tog with no extra clothes, so he's always been a sheets and blankets baby. They're usually kicked off in the first ten minutes!
