Are big babies better sleepers?

A question on behalf on my friend, who is currently recovering in hospital after c-sectionn and a 3 day labour to deliver her 1st baby girl - a whopping 11lb! She's knackered and asked me - 'does this mean she'll sleep through the night early'. To cheer her up, I said 'probably', but I don't really know, having 2 average sized babies! I've got a suspicion it might be a bit more complicated than that...

DS was 50th centile at birth, 75th by 6 weeks and has cruised along 99th centile since birth. First four months - shocking sleeper, slept through(ish) for a few days at 4.5 months; now at 7.5 months sleeping 5 hours in a row is a rare achievement. So not in this case, sadly! Wink

I think babies just do what they do, and half the time it changes anyway.

DD1 slept through at 6 weeks (8lb 13) DD2 at 7 weeks (10lb 3) DD2 now 3 months and needs to be woken after 13 hours, plus naps well in day. They are just chilled out babas - not sure it is anything to do with birth weight, but might give your friend hope. Both BF, and I had a section with DD2.

haha!
hahahahahahahhahahahahaha

no. i am sorry. it really, really doesn't

mamaduckbone · 16/08/2010 19:52

My ds2 was 11 lb 4 at birth and IME he slept well as a newborn (5-6 hour stretch very quickly) I assume because his tummy was bigger and could take more milk, then became terrible later....but I think as AngelDog said, it just depends on the temperament of the baby.

Congrats to your friend Smile - regardless of sleeping, big babies are fab - lots to cuddle!

AngelDog · 16/08/2010 19:56

dur...my post should have said 99th centile since then, not since birth. Blush

JaMmRocks · 16/08/2010 19:59

no.

expatinscotland · 16/08/2010 20:00

No. My son was the largest of all three, over 9lbs. He's been the worst sleeper of the lot.

thisismyname · 16/08/2010 20:01

not in my expeience - my 6lber slept through at 9 weeks and my 9 lber took foreverrrrrrrrrrrrr

Tyson86 · 16/08/2010 20:02

Ds slept through from one week old, he was only 6lb 6oz and has always been a good sleeper. :)

mousymouse · 16/08/2010 20:02

no - ds was a small 7 pounds and slept very well from the beginning
dd was over 9 pounds and is a sleeping nightmare...

tambourine · 16/08/2010 20:13

really really not

Threelittleducks · 16/08/2010 20:46

Ds was 10lb 9oz. Loves his bed. Always has. Still does. At 22 months we are averaging 12 hours a night. No joke. He has started sleeping in until 8.00am.

We are most definitely going to die when we have another newborn (and are going to struggle if newborn is not as good as ds was. Have been totally spoiled!!)

HeadFairy · 16/08/2010 20:50

ds was 7lb7 and dropped to 6lb13 where he stayed for weeks.. he was sleeping through at 10 weeks, and at 2.11 he's still a brilliant sleeper, will always do a 12 hour stretch and I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times he's woken up in the night this year.

Dd was 6lb15 at birth but is a bruiser now (7 months) and she's a shocker, wakes every 2-3 hours still (though settles easily thank God!)

No rhyme or reason IMO

Igglybuff · 16/08/2010 20:55

Sorry no. DS was 9lb 4oz. At 10 months he's finally down to one feed a night. I tried cutting out night feeds when he was younger but he lost weight!

Tillyscoutsmum · 16/08/2010 20:58

DD was 9lb 12oz and continued on 99th centile. She did 12-5 am stretches in the night from day one but didn't really get much better than that ! She was 12 months before she properly slept through

DS was 10lb 5oz born and is now over top centile line. He fed every 1.5-2 hours day and night (sometimes less) from birth. Now he is having (loads of) solid food, he is a bit better but still not sleeping through at 8 months.

amyboo · 17/08/2010 08:42

DS was off the charts at birth - 4.7kg (10lb 11oz) born by c-section at 39 weeks. The doctors reackoned he was breech because he was so big he'd simply got stuck!

Sadly it made noooooo difference to his sleep. He's never been an awful sleeper but rarely sleeps through. He used to wake twice a night when i was ebf. I've switched to bottles as i'm back to work on Monday and he now only wakes once from 7.30-6ish. He is now 20 weeks and on the 95th centile for height but only 50th for weight.

OhNoNotTheHoneyBabies · 17/08/2010 08:52

DS (16mo) is on the 95th centile and is still a rubbish sleeper....

Sorry! Grin

CrazyOVERbaby · 17/08/2010 09:57

Oh God, Thanks girls - everyone always says bigger babies sleep better, but I had a feeling it wasn't as easy as that! I'll just lie to my poor friend. And buy her coffee and berrocca. Who knows he might be an amazing sleeper - she certainly deserves a rest.

The baby is LUSH though. When I was preggers with both of mine I was hoping for a bruiser because big babies are just soooo bonny! Well worth the effort I say. And well done to all you ladies on here who have given birth to actual 3 month old newborns. You're a credit to your gender, hehehe
