Co-sleeping safely - how do you keep your baby from rolling out of bed?

With DS I tucked a sheet tightly under the mattress, laid him underneath the sheet then laid myself over the non-tucked end (does that make sense?). So in other words the sheet was tucked in on both sides - under the mattress on the right, and under my body on the left, with DS inside. I also laid pillows on the floor just in case...but thankfully nothing ever happened! (by the way, we have a very low bed)

DD is 3 months old and I'm sure there must be a better way. We can't push the bed against a wall in our room owing to the odd shape of the room. I've set up a BabyDan bed guard, which, IIRC, is meant for children aged 18 mos plus. Does anyone know why? I've stuffed a folded blanket in the miniscule gap between the bed and the guard, in case that might pose a limb-trapping hazard. Apart from that I can't think why it could be a problem, and we certainly used it with DS for a while when he was under a year old.

Would gratefully appreciate thoughts or suggestions of how else I can keep DD safe!

I did something similar - we had a very old fold down bed guard from when the older ones were babies and I put that on the bed. My baby didn't move much - she didn't get the hang of rolling over for months and months and months! It worked fine for me.

When we're in bed she sleeps in between us so can' fall out. When there's only one of us in bed or she's alone then I make a wall of pillows around her, she's only 6 months so can't negotiate that hurdle yet Wink

our 6 month old dd has co-slept with us from day one. she's been rolling for a month now and while she has rolled off the bed herself during the day whilst playing on the bed, she has never rolled out at night. when asleep next to me she never rolls about. if she does stir, it's usu because she's hungry and her movements will always wake me. i've never felt her in danger of falling out at night. i think as long as you are close to your baby in bed,and they are not too close to the edge, they will be safe. i don't think you need to stress about it too much.

DD always wakes me when she wakes even if she doesn't cry
After all they wake for milk so they come towards you :)
If for some reason she's quite close to the edge of the bed I put a pillow beside her - not foolproof but would take her a bit longer to get over

Glad I'm not the only one to worry about this.

My 7 m.o. DS sleeps on a mattress right next to mine, both on the floor. I use a Lindam bed rail, on the recommendation of someone on here. It also says from 18 months, but I think that's just the company covering their backs. That's on one side of him along with a small cupboard so the whole side of the bed is blocked, and I sleep on his other side.

DS doesn't roll around when asleep - although he has had a couple of night wakings when he's woken up and then wanted to roll / play. I woke up straight away then, even though he wasn't making any noise.

I'm worried about crawling, though. Our room will be virtually impossible to baby-proof and I can see DS making a speedy dash off the bed while I pop to the loo, and I would be sad to put him in his cot all night (he only sleeps in it until I go to bed at the moment).

what's not babyproofable?
Any why do you need a rail if you sleep on a mattrss on the floor?

AngelDog · 09/08/2010 19:48

Oh, it's only un-babyproofable because there's no room in the rest of the house for all the stuff which we store in the bedroom! :)

The rail is to keep DS out of all the junk hazards. Although to be fair, I did buy it when we were using a proper bed, but we moved the mattresses to the floor as co-sleeping in a single bed was rather a tight squeeze! (We only have single beds due to my DH suffering from long-standing insomnia.)
