We had the worst night ever last night. DS went to bed at 8pm and fell asleep quickly and with no fuss. He then woke every 10-15 minutes from 10:30 to midnight. then was up for over an hour screaming. fell asleep for one hour, then up and screaming for nearly two hours. up from 4:30 to 7a.m.

I gave him nurofen after midnight but it clearly didn't solve the problem.
yesterday afternoon he had a temperature of 37.5. When I checked it in the night it was 36.8

He started nursery last week, was in two half days, Tuesday and Wednesday. he seemed very happy and we had no tears, nights were OK. he hardly ever sleeps through, usually wakes 2-4 times but falls asleep when given the dummy.
Has anyone got any idea what could have been wrong with him last night?
Can teething keep them up all night and make them scream in spite of giving pain relief?

I am very tired and quite worried :(

ear ache would be my first thought it's excrutiating when they try to lay down. Mine once didn't sleep for 3 days before any of the drs bothered to look in her ears!

There could be many reasons- brewing illness, teething, nightmare, adjusting to nursery etc.

If, however, you rule out all of the above, 1 is sleep regression time. Usually coincides with learning to walk. They lose the ability to sleep, their brains are v busy indeed and they find it quite upsetting. If it's that, it's a phase and passes.

yes, earache.

Hope he has a good night tonight, and you! Smile

thanks for your quick replies!
I was thinking earache as well, but if this was the case, would nurofen not have done the trick?

not necessarily I would try paracetamol and nurofen together - it's in incredibly painful laying down with earache. I would phone the drs and ask for an out of hours appt - it may be viral which means they can't help but its worth ruling it out anyway.

thanks, I will see how he is today (he's been asleep for an hour now) and if tonight is bad again, DP will take him to the doctors tomorrow. Poor DS, it is his 1st birthday tomorrow. I'm upset about having to work and now worried about him.

He's gums don't feel swollen but he is drooling like mad.

yes, try the doctor. They tend not to do much for earache nowadays but at least you'll know.

Info on the 13-month (55 week) sleep regression here

duende · 09/08/2010 19:57

AngelDog, this sleep regression business really gets me down - we never fully recovered from the 8-9 month one!

:( I know, it's horrible, isn't it (dreading the 8/9 month one to come shortly here). But I tell myself that it's an exciting leap forward in my DS's abilities and maturity. It doesn't help much, but it sounds more cheerful than 'regression'. :)
