Should I stay up to watch a TV show about not sleeping?!

Ch4 show tonight about different approaches to your baby not sleeping - would love to watch as 19 mo still doesn't go through the night - but we normally go to bed at 9 - which is when it's on...realistically - what are the chances it will help given that we have tried EVERYTHING!!!

I will also be watching this with interest (and hope), DD is 2 and has not slept through the night once, am going mad!!

choufleur · 03/08/2010 20:20

Ds didn't sleep through til about 2 1/2 (and then would wake up at 5.30am) then one night he just started sleeping. I don't think it's actually that unusual for very small children not to sleep 7-7.

I'm sure you're right choufleur - it's just that everyone I know seems to have freaky weird incredibly sleeping babies... grrrr

It's available on 4ondemand so you can watch it on the web tomorrow!

Although I'm not sure it's a fair comparison of two methods since the programme blurb says that Chireal Shallow's method can take up to 6 weeks to work - and that the TV people are going back after 3 weeks to compare how well the two methods have succeeded.

lola0109 · 03/08/2010 21:53

Watching it just now and I can honestly say I have tried both methods and neither have worked!

I was watching hoping for miracle that I haven't tried but nothing.

Oh for even 4 hours uninteruppted!!

peppaandgeorge · 03/08/2010 21:58

lola, I'm with you there. I was also hoping for a miracle but both those experts have made it look like a walk in the park. I have tried every trick in the book to stock my 2.7 year old DS from getting up 3 times a night and neither tough love nor softly softly has worked for us.

They are more than welcome to come round and sort my non-sleeper out.

Am disappointed that there was nothing blinding that I haven't yet tried

lola0109 · 03/08/2010 22:19

Peppa I'm wondering if a night light would work, I looked up the bunny clock but think it looks scary so maybe try one if these here

DD is only 23 months but it's not so much a getting up during night (well not only) issue but actually getting to bed, it's taking hours!

bippyhippy · 03/08/2010 22:21

i think the reason it worked is because they had support. There is a useful article here on sleep training which emphasises consistency. I think that is often where i went wrong.

porcamiseria · 04/08/2010 09:01

whilst it was heartening to see others with issues, they made it look too easy

peppaandgeorge · 04/08/2010 13:54

lola, great suggestion re the nightlight. However, we do have the same one and although in the cold light of day he knows exactly what it means, he is not interested when he wakes in the night.

I've actually started to think that he's scared of the dark. He has 2 plug-in night lights in his room and there is one on the landing but when he wakes he just screams hysterically and either comes running through to us or screams hysterically in his bed until we come through to him which is what happened this morning. He was curled up in a ball in his bed and seemed petrified to move.

Out of desperation this morning I have ordered one of these so he can hold it in bed for comfort. If it doesn't work after a few days I'm sending it back as I'm sick of spending money on things that don't make a difference.

Good luck everyone else!

GabbyLoggon · 04/08/2010 16:35

I am sceptical about the good ending to such TV progs.

hodgepodge · 04/08/2010 21:38

I thought the goal was to get them sleeping through every night?! One night out of seven doesn't count (though would be nice!) - complete cop out - whole show.

On the plus side it seemed to prove leaving them to scream isn't the wonder cure everyone swears by - and what if they then get a cold or a tooth five minutes later you're back to square one, no?

Just seen this on 4od. Was struck by the similarity between the methods - ie the longer term solution did still mean withdrawal of all sleep aids and parental contact. Though she was trying to get results in half the time she'd normally expect.

Still can't see why ASW's method couldn't be done with a parent sitting by the bed - most of the effect seemed to come by not offering them milk every time they woke.

I was driven up the wall by the format of the programmme (but I quite like that - I watch them mainly to a allow a stress relieving rant). Pretty sure if stats were applied to the results there would have been no obvious difference seen.

I do like some of the things Channel 4 TV do. But "sleep"..."Fairyjobmother" and
the one with the A4E boss. Are just not convincing. Perhaps they will try a prog on Mumsnet some day.
