From birth to 6 month my little boy had really bad colic and cried a lot. He also had latching on probs with meant I could sit for up to an hour each time he woke just trying to get him to latch on before he fed.

This resulted in me co-sleeping with him. But at 16 months old, I am the only one who can settle him. I cant go out in the evening as he gets so upset. So I have decided to put him in a cot. But I sm in turmoil. He is in my room now screaming and has been for an hour. I fed him, sat with him, sang to him and then stayed there for a while but he wont calm down. I have resorted to coming away and checking him every 5 or so minutes. But I just dont know if I am doing the right thing.

I just want to pick him up and climb in my bed with him and snuggle up to him.
Please will someone tell me if I am doing the right thing or should I just let him stay in my bed for longer?

If you really want him to sleep in the cot you will have to persist. If you arre happy having him in bed with you then let him back in.

I had to use the controlled crying technique with my son who following colic got into a habit of waking throughout the night.

I let him cry for 3 minutes, then I would go in and place my hand on him so he knew I was there. Then the next time I let him cry for 4 minutes, and then went in and placed my hand on him again. You increase the length of time between going in by a minute until it gets up to 10 minutes, and go in every 10 minutes, placing your hand on him.

I was lucky because my son soon got the message and responded well. He was sleeping through after 3 nights. Sometimes he would wake again but I just did the old routine and it reasserted my determination not to give in, so he got bored andfell asleep. I would just say to make sure he isn`t crying in pain or discomfort before you do it.
