3 month old's daytime naps (or lack of)

My 3 month old sleeps through the night (usually until about 6) but will only nap during the day in his buggy, the car seat (when driving, not when stuck in traffic which is most of the time in London) or in his bouncy chair which I'm not supposed to leave him unattended in (even for a second!). Any suggestions, or should I just be grateful that he sleeps at night?

Count your lucky stars and stop worrying! It's very normal for them to enjoy a snooze in their buggy. Not so normal to sleep through at 3 months though so you are one very lucky mummy!

I wouldn't worry. My 4 month old is only just starting to take decent daytime naps. I would give anything for him to sleep through the night though. I am insanely envious!

Is he stroppy during the day? If not don't worry DD (also 3 months) has spectacular meltdowns if she gets too tired so at the slightest sign of tiredness I feed her to sleep and have a nap with her.

Thank you, feeling much better! Tends not to get too stroppy until the evening when he can become overtired.

I know I'm lucky - one of my friends has a two year told who still hasn't slept through the night. I was expecting the worst before I had him and it's turned out to be pretty good!

Why can't you leave them unattended in a
bouncy chair? If it's safely on the floor and they're strapped in what on earth could happen to them that couldn't happen in a Moses basket or carseat or any other 'non bed' that people have to resort to letting their baby sleep in? I'd not leave a 6 month old alone in one a 12 weeker couldn't bounce their way out of it, especially if they're asleep and you're in the next room? (I assume the furthest you'd go is the kitchen??)

Trafficcone · 03/08/2010 17:37

There should be a but in that! "but a 12 weeker........"

katie I came on here thinking about posting something similar to you about my 11 week DD - now I don't need to. Same things you describe - but my DS neither napped during day nor slept during the day, so I'm just relieved that nights are better this time round.

Katie I could have posted exactly what you have said when DD was 3 months old. She used to sleep 9-5 or 6 then feed and back to sleep until 8 - but she was a nightmare for naps.

All I can say is that at the time it was driving me crazy but looking back just those few weeks ago, things have changed massively.

She now naps (in her moses basket which was unheard of) at least twice per day. I still take her out in the pram or for drives for naps at least every other day as I don't want her to be the kind of baby who will only nap in her cot meaning I can't leave the house!!

Her nightime sleep is still fairly good although she is teething and also the dreaded '4 month sleep regression' is in full swing, so some nights are all over the place (as was last night - up at midnight, 4am and then up for the day at 7)

Basically I just wanted to say I wouldn't worry as things will change continuously over the next few months and just when you think you have one thing sussed, he will go and shift the goalposts once again, to keep you on your toes!

Katiekins3 · 04/08/2010 21:29

Thank you all. I did manage to get him to sleep in his cot for an hour a couple of days ago but haven't been able to repeat it!

Just trying to enjoy the nights at the moment. So many seem to suffer from the '4 month sleep regression' - not looking forward to it. Mind you, as I said before, it's been nothing like as bad as I expected so far so who knows.

Re the bouncy chair, I believe you're not supposed to leave them unattended in case they move and knock it over - I assume this rule is in place so we don't sue the manufacturers....
