my daughter is nearly 22months old and we have difficulty settling her to sleep in her bed in the evening. we had to put her in to a toddler bed from the age of 13months as she was scared of her cot. im a nursery nurse and should be used to the techniques of settling children to sleep - but iam baffled to be honest!!!even when she is finally asleep she will wake atleast 5times a night, sometimes settling after a reasurring pat and shhh and dummy in. any ides how to settle her in her bed and through the night as i think she may have separation issues from us i do not want to do the controll crying as i strongly dont agree with it any other ideas would be great pls x

try removing the dummy for anything except sleeping (apologies if you already do this) - I did this just after my dd's 2nd birthday and she slept MUCH better, because she was really ready for her dummy and the sucking brought great comfort and calming to her.

try reducing daytime naps a bit, or brining them forward so she is more tired at the end of the day, and sleeps better at night.

if she is waking due to losing her dummy, try the avent dummies, they rattle slightly where the handle taps the base, surround your baby with 6 or so of them and they'll ALWAYS find one, I guarantee. I NEVER did controlled crying, though there were nights when dd was playing me up that I did stand outside her door and let her cry for 30 secs or so then go in, and if she didnt stop crying, leave again etc so I guess it was a form of controlled crying (but I did it for my sanity not for her sleep training).

No other advice though I'm afraid except to say it does get better.
