Sleep and travel - nightmare

Hi there,

Just looking for reassurance and sympathy here!

This weekend we spent two nights away at a friend's house. It was an absolute nightmare - DS (10 months) didn't sleep from 2:30am to 6am the first night. We were all in the same room (DS in a cot) and he just wanted to crawl around and play. We were (and still are) shattered. The next night DH went to sleep in another room and it was slightly better, with DS co-sleeping with me.

DH is convinced that if DS were night-weaned (he has two feeds a night), he wouldn't have been like this. I'm not so sure.

Arrghh! Will we ever be able to have a weekend/holiday away for the next ten years?? Anyone else experienced this?

I would have thought it was due to a change in surroundings more than anything. Is he normally in his own room?

Yes, he's in his own room normally. We have a guest bed in there and I very rarely co-sleep with him, only on very difficult nights. This was the first time he'd been in a room with both of us.

There you go then - I wouldn't have thought whether you fed him or not would make a difference.

Whenever i went away DD's sleep was crap...whole day out of sync due to travelling, strange, unfamiliar house, cot and room.. Even at mum and dads which we did often.

Thanks littlemiss - it just seems as though everyone else travels around and goes on hols with their babies with no problem! Just need to know we're not alone...how many years does it last?

You're certainly not alone - just some people don't mention it i think. Whenever we have friends to stay here, their kids never sleep properly either.

Totally depends on the child. As i said DD was bad even at mum and dads, yet we took her to spain for 2 weeks, shared a room (although we sat on the balcony in the evening) and she slept great! I don't think you can plan either way. Don't let it put you off
