Cot Bumpers! Good or Bad?

Hi, With my first 3 I didn't have any bumpers and didn't see the need for them but now I've got a real wriggler. She's 8 months and literally bashes her way around the cot all night often waking. At 8 months are they still considered a health risk?

they are considered ok from birth until your lo is getting mobile and able to get up on their hands and knees. I would say your lo is now getting too old to get one.

Oh no, I thought it was the other way around.

I didn't use them until DD was 6 months old at which point she started to wriggle for Britain! I've just taken them off of her cot bed now at 22 months. They were a godsend for us as without them DD used to wake having bashed her head or got her legs stuck through the bars. I had 2 sets on at one point. 1 round the top and 1 along the side that she tended to get her legs stuck.

Exactly cbmum - that's what's happening.

I have an ikea one that goes all the way round the cot, I have had them on the cot since ds went into it. He was always bashing his head and getting his legs stuck. Have no probs with them, used them with dd too.

FSIDS say they make no difference to the SIDS risk, but are a hazard when they're old enough to use them to pull themselves up on, as there's a risk they may use them to climb out of the cot with IIRC.

DS did the getting-legs-stuck thing 'til we got this Airwrap thingy. Brilliant, and can't be used to climb out (believe me, he'd try)

DS has just turned 9mo, BTW

Lots of things have risks. I never had a problem with DD pulling herself up on her bumpers and I figured it was better to take the 'risk' compared to having to get out of bed to deal with an unhappy little girl goodness knows how many times each night! To be honest, the bigger problem was when she could sit up she hauled herself up on the cot bars and would run from one side of the cot to the other - cue lowering the mattress!
