sleep on tummy

My 4 1/2 mth old has just started turning onto her tummy in her cot and I'm worried this isn't safe. She usually does it just after we put her down to sleep 7pm or i will find her like this early in morning eg 5am (I assume she has just rolled over as I hear her stir but maybe she's been like it for hours) then she will wake properly between 6 and 7am. I turn her back over at 7pm but have been leaving her at 5am as i don't want to wake her (but then lie awake myself worrying). During daytime play she happily rolls from back to tummy but far less frequently rolls from tummy to back so I am not confident she could do so at night if she has breathing difficulties, especially when her legs get kind of twisted up in the sleeping bag. Has anyone else had this problem, what did you do?

Both my babies and a lot of other babies I have known preferred to sleep on their tummies. I guess they just found it more comfortable. They are all alive and fine and never had any breathing problems. I wonder if this was more of an issue when babies were put to bed with pillows and lots of other bedding, but I don't think her breathing will be impeded at all by sleeping on her tummy in a sleeping bag.

Hope this helps!

I wouldn't use a sleeping bag because of this, a cellular blanket would be better.

the angelcare monitor has a sensor pad which you place under the mattress and it detects movement. My dd has slept on her tummy from 8 weeks, it was a massive worry but the alarm was brilliant in reassuring me. My dd can now roll both ways very easily so i dont even bother trying to put her on her back. Just make sure there isnt anything in the cot that she could take with her when she rolls...and i second seashore a cellular blanket is much better.

Thanks all. I'll give a blanket a try tonight.

My DS rolls both ways and we use a sleepbag. You just need to make sure her head doesn't fit through the hole and the poppers under the arms are fastened if she's got small arms. There should be plenty of space for legs so they don't get tangled? My DS's legs never get twisted.
