Best resort for beginners

LoobyLou2709 · 24/06/2022 19:17

As title really, I can ski, children 9 & 7 who are fearless and have done ski school for last 2 trips to Austria, and hubby who is terrible! 🤣 wanting to book for Xmas this year, 7 days.

We tried all sorts before, kids in ski school, I skied on my own on more challenging runs, dh stayed in the bar!.. just found the holiday wasn't really spending enough time together as a family, DH finally cracked it (sort of!) and the best fun we had was when we were all ski-ing together on the easy slopes, laughing at each other, weaving in and out of flags going over little bumps etc on the nursery slopes!

Are there any resorts that has loads of easy long beginner runs like these? Where we went (Seefeld) they were really short slopes,

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly recieved, thank you Biscuit

Ironically I was going to suggest Seefeld!

skifam · 25/06/2022 19:08

Puy st vincent

Marmitelover24 · 25/06/2022 19:19

Serfaus in Austria, you have to walk to the gondola in the morning but then at the top there are loads of easy slopes accessible.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 25/06/2022 19:53

You didn’t say which continent, so I’ll throw in Nakiska. It’s an hour from Calgary, Canada.

Havanananana · 26/06/2022 21:01

Kronplatz - Italy
Wildschonau, Lofer, Rauris, Wagrain, Flachau. You already did Seefeld. - smaller resorts in Austria. Leogang if you want a mix of easy pistes and access to a bigger area (Saalbach-Hinterglemm) for those wanting a bit more of a challenge.

There is an old thread that you could look at regarding Rauris

see the post from @TeetotalKoala about 9 posts down.

Don't bother with the mega-resorts (and mega-expensive resorts) such as Courcheval or St. Anton if DH is only doing blue nursery runs.

Norway or Sweden would also be options in March or Easter - but not in Dec-Jan when it is too cold, so not so good for a Christmas holiday.

Africa2go · 27/06/2022 13:21

Cervinia - 100%. We've done a few Christmas holidays there and it is brilliant. Snow sure because it's high (and one year where the snow all over Europe was rubbish, the snow making + altitude meant it was still good enough for a week). Lots of really wide cruisey blues (but very do-able reds - my 6yr old on her first ski trip was doing reds by day 3). Possibility of going across to Zermatt (igloo village etc). Accommodation all close to the slopes, pizza and gelato for the children, restaurants where you can be collected / dropped off via skidoo (still my children's all time fave ski holiday memory), reasonably priced.

SeaToSki · 27/06/2022 13:23

Sunday River (USA East Coast). Rent a slope side apartment at South Ridge, then you can all bounce in and out all day depending on who wants to do what.

turtletum · 21/08/2022 15:21

Not sure if you've already booked but I highly recommend Les Saisies. Lots of short, easy pistes on both sides of the valley that all meet back at the village. There are longer and more challenging runs for those that want that too, but much of the 'home slopes' are very accessible. I took my kids in their first ski holiday there and it was ideal. Very French resort, which I liked. Reliable snow record close to Mnt Blanc.

myrtilles · 01/09/2022 22:40

Montgenevre definitely. Les saisies is good for beginners but the slopes are not that long. la Rosiere is good but lacks trees so if you have whiteout conditions it can be limited. I would not recommend La Plagne. On paper it has the runs you need but it can get busy at Christmas and has above average numbers of out of control skiers in my experience.

Holidayqueen1 · 15/09/2022 09:40

We had a couple of Christmas holidays in La Plagne and loved it. For context I’m a nervous skier after a few incidents years ago. I had a fab 1 on 1 lesson. There were loads of cruisey blues and we didn’t find it too busy most of the time.
the other place we skied and absolutely loved was Banff- some amazing long cruisey runs and I did my first red there ( or black diamond in the US).
i didn’t like Tignes but probably because of the ice when we were there.

skgnome · 15/09/2022 09:53

I have a soft spot for la Plagne
so I’m going to add my vote to la Plagne, there are lots of very long wide blue runs

cestlavielife · 04/10/2022 18:25

Serre chevalier long green runs

Worriedaboutethics · 04/10/2022 18:46

@LoobyLou2709

apart from a few specific resorts most have Green runs. So I would be sorties more about making sure those runs don’t get Icey and more worried about peoples fear of Hieghts.

As peoplé take to skiing at different rates and have more or less guts to try stuff and you won’t know until you try.

whereas fear of Hieghts means avoid resorts with lots of cable cars and go for ones with bubbles.

ps if nervous passengers too don’t get a coach to the resort. Get a mini bus.

Where did you end up @LoobyLou2709

We're on our second trip to a resort, but I could have written your post. Three of us are fine, but husband has got in his head now and isn't confident on slopes he's skied before following a tumble on Saturdaythat knocked his confidence.

He's said that next year, he's going back to beginner lessons, but he's pretty much written off this year already. We're in very plush accommodation so he's enjoying the facilities, but it's a real shame he won't book in with an instructor this week. He's happy and not stopping the rest of us from skiing, but I would like to ski with him occasionally. The company is nice!

We've just been discussing our next trip, and a requirement will be somewhere with long, easy, cruisey blues. Ideally with accommodation next to the lift as we've been spoiled this year.

I’ve recommended it on other threads, but Geilo in Norway is ideal for long, tree-lined blue runs

have you try ought about Whistler Blackcomb? We went this year - been before but 1st time all skiing together & it is fabulous. The peak to peak gondola is AMAZING & The scale is vast.

I would get used to the greens before your DH does the blues - the sheer size of them makes them feel a bit more than a blue if you know what I mean?

whistler has a family zone which is great but Blackcomb is the better mountain. All round incredible really.

We like Switzerland too - Diableret, Villars, Isenau, Gstaad, Glacier 3000, that whole area.

We are going to try France in a week or so.

We have actually ended up in Alpe d'Huez! arrived Xmas eve, and skied Xmas day and Boxing Day and it was amazing! .. today though has been soooo busy! Glad we had a couple of quiet days to master the chair lifts and find our feet. We chose here because there are loads of green runs and it's snow sure for Xmas as quite high up, blues are still a bit of a challenge for dh, although there is one lovely long run called Marcels Farm and has little bumps and a tunnel etc, the kids love it! and so does Dh, he's mastered the turning and staying upright, it's just the stopping that's proving a problem! 😂 easy to get around here, I think next year we'll be ready for a resort with the long 'crusey' blues! And lots of advise here is really good!
