i am starting to plan a trip feb 2011 (half term). there will be a group of us - say 10 adults and 6 kids. pretty much everyone are beginners with ski-ing. we will want ski-school for 5year old and nursery for all the other children, just for half a day each day. would really like to be in our own catered chalet. i was thinking Andorra or Bulgaria because someone said it was cheaper and that is very important.

any suggestions?

Andorra is no longer cheap - it hasn't been for the best part of 10 years, and I've not heard of any catered chalets in Bulgaria.

But if cost is very important, do you really need to go at half term: the most expensive and busiest time of the year?? Next season there will be plenty of vacancies in late march when the weather will be kinder, the evenings light and the prices cheaper.

I don't have any specific recommendations, but if you are really looking for a catered chalet, then look at Morzine, and to keep the cost down consider driving - it only takes a day, same as flying.

i'm afraid my daughter is in school now so we have to go during school holidays. (afraid i don't believe in taking her out of school just for a holiday). i shall have a look at morzine, thanks, and useful to know about andorra. anyone else got any advice?

Easter is cheaper and walmer than half term but may be running out of snow. A friend of mine has just come back from La Tania with Family friendly skiing which looks reasonable value and she said she had a great time - no flights included in those prices though!

We spent a week here in January and it was excellent. We skiied to the door, the food was amazing and the chalet staff so friendly. There was a log fire which we sat in front of every evening with a glass or two of wine. The ski area was not large but all of us agreed that we had found a gem. This is in France by the way but we flew to Geneva and hired a car from there.

I think this works. Forgot to add that the lift pass was so cheap compared to other resorts.

Could you not do Christmas week instead of half term, it's almost half the price as this random choice shows?

orienteerer · 14/03/2010 19:58

argh here

chalets are not really the done thing in andorra - mostly hotels and apartments.

think you'd be more likely to find a catered chalet in france - la rosiere, la plagne, courcheval, meribel all good for lots of chalets that size, perhaps les deux alps and alp d'huez also (excuse dodgy spelling). expensive for half term though.

also look at sauze doux (spelling again?) in italy...

I can recommend Chalet Amis with TG Ski in Morzine. We were a big group and mostly beginners. They have another chalet too which is a bit smaller.

Not cheap, but Sainte Foy is a great resort for children, and has some good skiing for all abilities.
