Any of you ski-ing ladies suffered from SPD and got back into ski-ing?

I was pretty much laid flat with SPD when pregnant with DS who is now 2 yo and have not yet got back on my skis as I am so worried about it. In fact I had vowed never to ski again but I have just come back from the Alps where the snow was perfect and the sun shone every day and DD was on skis and DH on a snowboard and I was on home-base duty although I went sledging every day with DS. To tell you the truth I was dying to get back on the slopes and DH kept on encouraging me to do something but fear held me back.

Any words of advice / your stories?

Try a few treatments from a registered osteopath. I had SPD when pg with DS2 but have successfully returned to exercise of all forms - including skiing - after a series of osteopathic treatments.

Also, working on the core muscles will help to take the pressure of the pelvis and stabilize the joints. Try pilates, yoga and/or the Tupler method.

I mean " off the pelvis" rather than " of "

I suffered from SPD in both pregnancies but went skiing when the youngest was 3 with no problems.

However if you are worried maybe it would be worth seeing a physio for reassurance.

I had SPD during both pregnancies but to be honest it wasn't severe and I was back on my board within 4 months of giving birth.

Are you near any of the domes? You could give it a go there and see how you get on.

I had SPD for two pregancies but second time went to a McTimoney chiropractor who was fantastic and kept me pain free. I've since started snowboarding, (3yrs later) with no problems, but its still probably less stressful on your pelvis than skiing as theres no way for your knees to separate and go in different directions like on ski's.

If your DH snowboards are you interested in learning that? In general though having SPD in the past shouldn't be a problem now.

I second Tulpe's suggestion about strengthening your 'core' muscles - I do pilates mat classes which are great and much cheaper than full-on pilates with the machines etc.

Thanks for all your replies - I think I shall try and work on core muscles before I try ski-ing.

Is snowboarding really less hard on your pelvis? I thought that the drag lifts on a snowboard would be a nightmare.

drag lifts on snowboard are hard, as is taking a small child on one on a snowboard, so most boarders avoid them if they can.

i think you should be fine skiing again - your ligaments will come back to shape slowly. try one of the indoor slopes in the uk - then you will only waste an hour of your time and not too much money if it turns out wrong.
(my SPD was mild, but i managed to ski after no problems).

I avoid drag lifts with a snowboard! Its something I check when picking resorts!

I had spd, and a nasty fall when I was pg with ds2. I ended up with residual symphysis pubis and sacro iliac joint problems.

DS2 is nealy 2 now. I have been having physio for nearly a year and had my si joints injected last November. I am still working on strengthening up (very specifically under my physio's guidance) but went skiing last month and managed at least 3 hours every day with no problems.

If you are near to Cardiff then I can recommend a very good physio.

I live in cardiff and am still suffering from spd and si joint problems two years after my third child. Can you recommend the physio in cardiff that is helping you?Thankyou so much.

My youngest will be 5 this summer. I had really bad spd, and could not walk properly till he was 6 months old.

I havbe been cross country skiing for the last two years, which is fine, unless I go down hill and need to plough down. The strain on my hips and knees is quite bad.

I tried downhill skiing this winter, and found that there was a pressure on my hips and bottom, but not more than I could manage. I only managed to ski for two hours, then I needed a days break between each skiing session to recover.

But I am slightly overweight, I think it might have been a lot better if I had been slimmer and generally more fit.
