My FIL lives in the next village (La Joux) and I know the area and ski area very well. Personally, I think its a lovely place to learn to ski - never overly crowded, very low-key. Can heartily recommend Denis from ESF if your DH is after a few lessons. I learnt to ski there and DS1 had his first set of lessons there too.
Which apartments are you staying in?
TBH, it is such a small area that most of the apartments are within walking distance.
The town is very quiet and about as far as you can get from "lively apres-ski". There is a well-stocked supermarket, a bakery, several restaurants, a few bars, couple of ski shops.
There is a creche near the main lift which is very well run (or certainly has been in the past). Both mine have stayed there - DS2 when he was only 14 months and DS1 aged 5. Both had fun and were more than happy to go along.
In terms of keeping DCs entertained when not skiing: There is a small children's playground in the car park opposite the main lift but it isn't spectacular! If you have a car, drive across the Swiss border to Bouveret (takes approx 30 minutes) where you will find a huge indoor swimming pool full of pirate ships, slides, plunge pools, rapids etc. Its expensive (as are most things in Switzerland) but its fun and will easily entertain the little ones for a whole afternoon. There is also a model steam train park there too, next door to the pool.
Alternatively, Evian is a 20 minute drive down the mountain. Go for a walk by Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) - there are plenty of places to stop for hot chocolate, a few play parks etc and again a great choice of restaurants. The Hilton has a fab restaurant that, despite its appearance is very child friendly. We have eaten there on many occasions - even quite late at night and DCs have been totally indulged!
