Sorry, I haven't done Club Med, but I have skiied at Alpe d'Huez and it was brilliant. I seem to remember that there was an ice rink there too and a swimming pool that you could swim from indoors to the outdoors and both of these were, I think, included on your lift pass. I do remember jumping out of the pool and rolling in the snow and then jumping back in again, like a loon

The skiing was good too. I took a group of friends of varying ability with me (I arranged it as I had just split up with a boyfriend at the time), and we all managed to meet up on the slopes and have a great time.

The only thing I didn't like was the zig-zag road up tot the resort. It was something like 50 hairpin bends !!

Sorry, if that's no help whatsoever....

Hi Pesto, thanks for your reply. It looks like a good resort for kids with all the extra activities, i like the sound of your loon pool behaviour! .

Yeah the road up is a nightmare!!

We went a few years ago and stayed a bit further up the hill from the Club Med. There were English and French there.
We would definitely consider it for future skiing holidays because the childcare is so good.

I've done other Club Med in the past, and DH and I are just booking one on France's west coast for our summer holiday. Can't recommend them enough, because although the price seems high-ish up front you don't then have any extras to pay at all.

it's about 21 hairpin bends not 50!!!!!!!!!! (seems like it goes on and on though - they cycle the tour de france UP it)
Alpe dhuez is a good resort though, loads of runs fro all abilities

poppy34 · 09/02/2009 10:56

yes done it twice.. not all french people - instructors will speak english, its very good way to improve your skiing (you get shoved in groups of like ability with an instructor who'll instruct /guide as much as necessary).

great for kids, food fab and the butlins type entertainment is optional - definitely give it a go.

Thanks for all your replies, think we will go for it, can't wait!

We have done Club Med skiing and found that the childcare was not great for young children (under 6) because although the carers speak English it is very much the second language(fair enough it is French company operating in France). However, once the children were older they absolutely loved it and I would recommend it.They made friends and 12 yr old DS loved the freedom. There were enough English children there for a good pool of friends plus lots of other children spoke English - had hoped that DCs would practise French but no luck! Ski lessons were good - i like esf because the courses are structured and they have tests to see if they have learned enough to progress to the next level. Prices are good when you think that the only extras are postcards and ski hire.

Thanks helprelocating, that is very helpful. We are probably booking it today as it does seem like a very good deal with everything included. I am sure 9 year old ds will love it, dd might be more clingy i feel!
