Two questions - what underneath layers and anyone been to Garmisch in Germany?

I'm going for a weekend ski trip next month - just me and a friend.

We've booked flights to Munich and are thinking of Garmisch in Germany - it's about 1.5 hours' drive.

First question - what do you wear under your ski jacket? I'm an experienced skier and usually wear a Climacool t-shirt and a
fleece if it's very cold - stuff I've had for years and am planning to update.

I think clothes technology has moved on a bit since I last splashed out though, so am interested in knowing what works for you, especially if more lightweight layers are warm enough.

I have a good, warm ski jacket. A colleague swears by merino wool - any idea who'd sell this at a reasonable price? Or any alternative suggestions?

Secondly, has anyone ski-ed in Garmisch?
There are apparently five ski areas - do you know if they're linked at the top, or do you have to come down to valley level and get the bus to ski between them?

And where would be a good place to stay? It looks as though Garmisch itself would mean a ski-bus or drive to the lifts, which we'd rather avoid if we can walk to lifts and ski back to accommodation.

TIA

Don't know about Garmisch, but I wear silk thermals from Patra, a cotton polo neck and then a fleece gillet if it's really cold. Lots of warmth without bulk.

Layers: I wear a merino base layer and mid-layer. They are so warm and snug and apparently will even keep you warm if the wool gets wet. They are graded according to thickness/weight. Last week I wore my 260gm base layer beneath a 370 mid-layer but was too warm so I switched to a 170 gm base layer. I was skiing in Belle Plagne at around 2100m and even on the one very windy and cold day it was fine. I would really recommend them as they are so light and not at all bulky to layer up beneath jackets.

The brands I have bought are Ice Breaker (which were approx £45 for base layer and £70 for mid-layer) and Drizabone (which I got at a bargain price in TK Maxx for £10).

I wear thermals, then an artifical fibre sous-pulle with a zip neck, then a ski anorak. On the bottom half thermals and padded ski trousers. I buy it all online from Tchibo.

I have spent a lot of time in Garmisch as I have family nearby, but not skiied much there.

Hotel Boddenburg is right on one of the lower smaller slopes and very reasonable, on the Partenkirchen side I think. But probably not near enough to the proper skiing for you.
