I have to say out of all the Esrit holidays I've had I probably enjoyed this one the least. Its the only Esprit place I would never go back to. Maybe its just not my thing, I think I've definetly decided I prefer smaller chalets.

The good things;

Snow Rangers were fab.
DD loved Coco Club
DD was the only child in her ski group so had private tuition all week!
There is free Wifi.
The rooms are very nice, fantastic view, bigger than any other room I've stayed in. Flat screen TV, DVD player.

The not so good things;

I found the hotel too big and too impersonal. Nobody talks to anyone and I missed that part of getting to know other people. We were sat with the same 2 people for dinner every night. Luckily they were really nice and we got on, if we hadn't then it would have been crap.

There is no decent seating area. There is a bar and sofa area in the hotel lobby. But it really is like sitting in a hotel lobby and you wouldn't wonder down there with a book and chill out like in other chalets I've been to.

The pool was too cold, other parents ignored the no chldren in the hot tubs rule and the indoor hot tub were full of screaming, jumping kids. The kids then must have weeed in the hot tub as a few days later it was shut for maintanence.

The hotel isn't secure. French people sneak in the door near the outside hot tub and use the saunas, hot tubs.

The service is terribly slow. They can't start everyones' meals at the same time so one night will call in tables 1-14 first, then 30 minutes later the next tables. Swap over the following night. It can be after 9:00pm by the time you get starters. And it can then be a long wait for main course.

Kids menus were a bit odd. Maybe its my fault that DD isn't a great eater but other parents said the same. Fish mornay? We had tears over the meal most nights. I'm on holiday and can't be doing with it.

Our room was on the first floor and right oevr the kitchen. Kitchen staff had a loud stereo on full blast while they cleaned up till gone 11:00pm every night. This kept us awake. We had to ring up reception every night about it.

Coffee is £4 in the bar
Beer is £6 a pint! There are no coffee making facilities/kettles in the rooms. Bloody rip off.

Quality of the food varied. I had boiled potatoes one night that were rock solid.

The snow was in terrible condition but guess I can't blame Esprit for that. I also dropped my purse in the middle of a blue run and realised 5 mins later. Some fecker has had it as it wasn't handed in. So lost my holiday money and cards. Agan can't blame Esprit but didn't help the holiday.

La Plagne seemed nice and if the snow had been better I think the skiing would have been fab. We skiied over to Les Arcs one day which is worth doing.

Belle Plagne itself is really small, not a great choice of restaurants but we had a meal out at La Belle Cloche which was nice. The mountain restaurant near the bottom of the Hari Kari run over towards Champagny is good, think its called the Belvedere or something like that. Another good restaurant is below the Roche De Mio cable car, not the restaurant right at the cable car station but a little lower down as if you were heading for the Le Tunnel run. Great lasagna there.

Some friends stayed with Esprit in a different resort the same week as us. He's celiac so payed an extra £25 so they could cater for gluten free stuff. They cooked him a cake which they swore was gluten free, he ate a slice and was ill afterwards. He confronted the chalet staff who still swore they were using gluten free flour but when he asked to see the packet of flour suprise, suprise they reckoned they'd used it all up

I'm going here on 8 March and if the security is so bad, the meals so badly organised, and the pool so cold, will be well p--d off!Assuming esprit don't read mumsnet, anyone else who's going think its worth e-mailing them at Customer Service re the concerns? Its meant to be one of their top chalet hotels....

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 23/01/2009 16:29

I was wondering the same Praline. Will definitely do so now as we are off there on 1st Feb so do not want to be worrying - especially about security.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 23/01/2009 16:30

Ok, just been to their site and there is not email contact listed on the site. Guess I will have to call them.

jackofall · 23/01/2009 16:39

we're just back from our 5th esprit hols - i think this one was the best yet - alba hotel in meribel.... the friends we were with did the same hol at belle plagne last year and had similar feedback about it being very smart but lacking in character... our least favourite so far was the chalet hotel in val d'isere which was a shame coz i loved the resort...

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 23/01/2009 16:42

Right, have just called Esprit and said "my friend has just returned from Belle Plagne etc etc"! Could hardly say twas on mumsnet but perhaps I should have done??

Anyway, they said it was the first call of concern they had had regarding security at the hotel. They are going to contact the hotel and discuss with them and get back to me on Monday morning. I will of course pass any info on to you all here .

pralinegirl · 23/01/2009 17:07

Well done,that woman...
I have just e-mailed and guessed the address, saying am concerned, where I read it, that mums book most holidays, and we certainly won't reading a review like this, especially re security where our kids will be sleeping while we eat dinner and strolling around. If its the wrong address I'll ring them too, 2 calls will definately make them jump!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 23/01/2009 21:52

Well it may be the first call they've had about it but they are aware of it as I raised my concerns about the lack of security on the Guest Service Qestionaiire at the end of the week.

Though in fairness they way the hotel is laid out - yes people can come in off the street to the pool/spa area. And yes there is free access from there to the rest of the hotel but you would have to walk past the reception desk to get to the rest of the hotel. Maybe the staff would be switched on enough to realise its not a guest? Althogh if someone looks the part and swans past without looking lost I can't imagine them been stopped as there are too many guests for them to recognise everyone I'd have thought.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 23/01/2009 22:42

Stripey - I told them you had raised your concerns in resort but the woman I spoke with was at the main booking centre. She spoke with her manager and said they would contact hotel manager/esprit people in resort and come back to me. Be interesting to see their response.

TBH, I know it sounds uptight, but I don't want random people wandering in from wherever. They shouldn't be able to wander in and out of the hotel and I feel like my kids would be vulnerable somehow. Can't explain it really without sounding uptight I suppose. Also am resentful of non-payers wandering in to use facilities that I am paying a premium to use!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 24/01/2009 10:50

I agree with you. I think the fact that people who haven't paid could be filling the hot tub up is annoying.

I never really felt that DD's safety was comprimised though, she was either with us or a Snow Ranger. The bedroom doors lock automaticly so noone could get in your room.

I told DH that people have rung Esprit 'cos of my review and he reckons we'll be barred from Esprit now. Oh well, Mark Warner here we come.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 24/01/2009 15:57

well if esprit have any sense Stripey, they will be going out of their way to make sure you have no cause for complaint next year

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 24/01/2009 20:19

Maybe they could offer me a freebie holiday and in return I would write them a glowing review.

OP posts:
OneLieIn · 24/01/2009 20:24

Stripey, you should complain. We did after a shocker with Esprit last year. You need to complain in writing as well. I will see if I can fish out the email address....

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 25/01/2009 18:51

Did you get any cash bac?

OP posts:
OneLieIn · 25/01/2009 20:22

Yes we did. We got a full refund for the snowclub, which was what we had grief with. Our friends also got a big refund on their room which was basically a kitchen with a double bed in it.

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 26/01/2009 13:39

Okay, have just heard back from Esprit regarding security at the hotel. They tell me that the problem is that the door between pool and outdoor hot tub must be pushed firmly shut but for some reason it doesn't always lock. They have now placed an attendant in the pool area who will ensure that the door is always closed and checking that all spa/pool users are guests only.

Result!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 26/01/2009 14:48

Sorry, but I think the thing about the door is crap - it does not lock when you shut it. I certainly closed it properly and it never locked. And if it did any guest that used the outdoor hot tub would be locked outside! How would you get back into the hotel? There is no swipe facility at that door to use your room key for entrance like at the boot room door.

The pool attendent is a good idea though IF they stick to it.

OP posts:
TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 26/01/2009 14:59

Perhaps I misunderstood their response then? I assumed from the way she was talking that there was a kind of swipe card system on that door but obviously not! But hopefully the attendant will be a season-long fixture

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 26/01/2009 18:37

Or Esprit will just tell you any old rubbish or have no clue what they're talking about.

OP posts:
TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 26/01/2009 18:38

That had crossed my mind too

OneLieIn · 27/01/2009 09:43

IMHO when I complained to Esprit about last year, they did lie in writing to me about what happened. They then later contradicted that lie with another.

If it was me, I would write to them again saying thanks for resolving it, I look forward to visiting and seeing the resolution.

Jemimasmummy · 09/02/2009 16:46

Blimey Im a bit worried now as we are going here in December. It will be our 2nd Esprit holiday and tbh I think Esprit are the best for families with really young kids our kids will be 5 & 2 and we needed the convenience of the onsite childcare, snowclubs & sprites. As I recall Mark Warner don't do the baby listening service of an evening with Esprit staff on each floor who will go into the room and settle the kids (if you want them to)and come and get you if they can't settle them - but I could be wrong. I wonder if Jackofall is talking about the Ducs De Savoie when she said she had a bad time at a chalethotel in Val d'isere as we had a great time there. OK the hotel is off a side street and very basic for a 4 star place but the food, childcare and staff were just brilliant - the skiing second to none but people have different experiences at different times by the sound of it. We shortlisted the Alba & deux domaines but plumped the deux domaines and even splashed out on a suite - I hope we have made the right decision!!!

TheRealMrsJohnSimm · 09/02/2009 18:23

Jemimasmummy: I wouldn't be worried at all. I have just come back from Deux Domaines and I was very impressed with the hotel - we will definitely go back again next year. We were in a Paradiski Suite too and it was fab. Very spacious with lovely views and very comfy beds

If you have a look at my review in this section, you will see that they have resolved the security issues which Stripey commented on.
