I am thinking of La Rosiere or Belle Plagne. They both seem very family orientated.

Just wondered if anyone had found a gem of a place and wanted to share their secret!

I've been to La Rosiere, it's great for kids. And if I remember rightly lots of good extensive skiing for everyone.

LIZS · 20/12/2008 09:21

Saas Fee, specifically Hotel Alphuebel - free childcare, early kids' evening meals fi you choose , entertainment and run by a family who cannot do enough to please.

tiredemma · 20/12/2008 09:23

We are going to Zell am See next week- never been before, Ill report when i get back!

LilRedWG · 20/12/2008 09:26

Winter Park, Colorado. Great for all levels of experience.

elastamum · 20/12/2008 09:37

Val d'isere. But dont go there unless the whole family can ski as all the runs back to the village are pretty steep, the ones marked easy are a bit of a local joke and littered with bodies of english holiday makers most days

smartiejakeonachristmascake · 20/12/2008 09:45

Chatel (in France)is a great base for skiing. Ski schools are good and it's in the Ports soleil region where there are loads of different runs for all abilities.

twizzler · 20/12/2008 10:47

LilRedWG, have been to Canada before and it was amazing. Would love to go to Colarado but don't want to do long flight and big time change with DS who is 4.

Do you go with DC?

Tiredemma, there are great slopes in Zell am See if I remember well. I find Austria has the best slopes, in general. For family friendly places look in South Tyrol. It's great there.

twizzler · 20/12/2008 10:58

ooh, will have a look at Austria as well.

I love all the pretty chocolate box villages there too.

familienhotels in south tyrol

sonniboo · 20/12/2008 19:26

Austria is definately the most family-friendly country we've visited - specifically Zell am See, Serfaus and Obertauern!!

Have a look at www.kinderhotels.com - they are an association of child friendly hotels.

mamhaf · 20/12/2008 20:49

I'd second La Plagne - Belle Plagne is especially pretty.

And although the transfers are long, we're fond of Andorra - specifically Soldeu. Great ski school and a lot of fun.

In the past we've used Air Miles to fly-drive from Barcelona which is a less tiring way than a package, and a bit cheaper. You can also fly to Toulouse and drive there.

toomanyprojects · 21/12/2008 08:40

We have stayed in Montchavin (Esprit don't go there now), La Rosiere (twice) and St Anton.

Looking to go back to La Ros this year - the chalets are nice and close to the slopes. Fairly long transfer though.

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 21/12/2008 20:14

I loved Montchavin for the skiing when we went although the resort itself is tiny. So in a few weeks we are off to Belle Plagne - hopefully the pistes are as good but the resort a bit bigger.

Anteater · 23/12/2008 00:36

Has to be Zermatt, returning for the 8th year running ($ permiting) in Feb. Combines the best scenery, sking, food, ease of transfer, safe for children and variety of runs available anywhere in the world..
dull I know but hey!

othersideofchannel · 23/12/2008 11:23

Yes, Zermatt is wonderful - we've been there several times before we had kids. Only negative is that it's a bit of a hassle to get to.

Otherwise would definately say Austria. Serfaus is particularly nice for small kids. Would also agree that the Kinderhotels (www.kinderhotels.com) are very good for families with (small) children.

thereferee · 23/12/2008 14:28

la rosiere

Anna8888 · 23/12/2008 14:30

Val d'Isère.

twizzler · 03/01/2009 18:07

Looks like we may be going to La Rosiere with Esprit!

Thanks for all your posts. It's kept me going with all the research and might try some of them next year!

Thank you and happy skiing .

Hi Twizzler

Have you taken the plunge and booked then? Which week are you going?

Nighbynight · 03/01/2009 18:58

We live on the edge of the Bavarian alps, and I would certainly recommend this area, especially if you hire a car or bring your own. There are loads of villages with a small ski area close to each other. On the map, it's on the edge of the alps, approximately between munich and salzburg.

In january, the world snowboarding championships will be at sudelfeld, near bayerishzell. Nearby is tannerfeld, which is a nursery slope suitable for the most nervous or tiny beginner. About 5 km away is Geitau, which is advertised as "suitable for children and beginners"

The skiing round here tends to be aimed at day visitors from munich, it is fairly reasonably priced and very down to earth - just families enjoying themselves.

Northernlurker · 03/01/2009 19:02

Just curious - is it really possible to have a 'family' sking holiday with small children? I've always feared one of you would end up sking whilst the other has an exciting week putting on boots and rounding up mittens?

subtlemouse · 03/01/2009 19:03

Northernlurker -
that was my experience...

soapbox · 03/01/2009 19:05

We do Beaver Creek in Colorado and have done for some years now.

It really is very family friendly and the time difference works perfectly for a ski holiday where getting up early works well.

JJ · 03/01/2009 19:06

NL, yes, if you are at a hotel with a creche. We went to Hotel Alpenrose for five years (my boys were age 2 and 5 our first year). It's a Kinderhotel. We're not going this year because my 10yo can't ski due to a dodgy hip. I highly recommend it - they redid the whole thing last year and it's even better. It's in Lermoos, Austria.
