Tips for taking 1 year old skiing !!

Hi ladies - does anyone have any tips for taking a 1 year old on a skiing holiday ?! DH & I have rather impulsively booked a long weekend skiing with our 16 month old and I’m starting to stress that it’s going to be a bit of a nightmare lol.

Main idea is for DH to get up early to do some skiing and then me & DS will get the funicular up to meet him.

Anyway my main questions are

  • should I take his proper pram? DH wants the travel buggy but it’s quite flimsy and I’m worried it won’t do well if it’s snowing
  • will his pram suit be sufficient or does he need a proper snow suit ? I’m thinking he’ll wear his knitted leggings and jumpers underneath but don’t want him to be cold

any other advice would be really appreciated ! Thank you x

Hire an all terrain buggy or sled with a seat in resort or use a back carrier. Dress him in an extra layer to yourself to allow for lack of movement. If he is walking he needs snow-boots and a waterproof/windproof snow suit and mitts, woolly hat, sunglasses and high factor suncream. Book accommodation where you can stay in and play if weather is not great.

And take a basic health kit with calpol, skin cream etc and bottles to suck in case of ear pain at altitude or popping on the lift.

Sunscreen and sunglasses on a Velcro strap. Buggies with small wheels are useless on snow, so unless you can be sure that there will be snow-free paths you’d be better off with your ds sitting on a sledge so you can tow him. Buggy could be used in the airport though.

Am I right in understanding that you’re not going to ski? We took our ds at 16 months - as I recall I got salopettes and a jacket for him - but went in a family group so dh and I both got time to ski together. It’s a long way to take a 16 month old for a long weekend if you’re just providing childcare while your dh skis.

Personally I would book a nanny for the mornings so you can ski together. Don’t except a 16 month old to appreciate snow. My two just found it cold and wet.

Hire a buggy in resort, a folding travel buggy is just not going to cut it in the snow.

lots of layers are key.

@LIZS ooohh that’s a great idea re hiring the buggy. Really good tips thank you.

@stringbean sadly skiing is no longer on the cards for me after an unrelated knee injury but hoping it will be a nice change of scenery…hoping I don’t regret it lol as it is a long way to go

thank you for the tips

@Embarrassedmumoftoddler - that’s a shame. Is a Mojo a possibility? https://ski-mojo.co.uk/

We went skiing with my 3 year old and 10 month old.
I wouldn’t bother with a travel buggy - it can’t cope with the snow, we had to borrow a sledge from the hotel, luckily our pushchair cover (cosy toes) fit over.
It snowed LOADS when we went (I know that sounds silly, but it was April, so usually isn’t too much snow!), so prepare there may be days you’re restricted to the hotel/not going too far and have toys ready.
We used our normal pram suit, as it was waterproof (not all are) so was fine playing in the snow and in the sledge.
We had a great time though so enjoy!

When we took our son aged 2yrs 2 mths, we hired a sledge to travel around the resort. He had a ski suit, ski gloves, sunglasses and moon boots for playing out in the snow, which he loved.

We just got back from a weeks skiing with our 15 month old and 6 year old. You’ll be fine, sounds highly relaxing compared to our arrangements for us all to get out skiing by 9am every morning and little one to hit the crèche for 3hrs! We bought a wed’ze snow suit and gloves off vinted & packed both a sledge and a back carrier, you can probably hire either of these things out there, we also took a buggy for the airport. It was quite a sight those 13 luggage items we took (including our skis etc), but we like to max out the allowance and most airlines allow 2 baby items per a baby.

Had normal clothes underneath no problem. Borrowed some baby goggles but her baby sunglasses were a better fit in end, also had her baby balaclava but we just have that from the hiking we do and any hat they can’t take off is fine.

I wouldn’t say she was enamoured by the snow but even the tourist centre had a little children’s play area inside it so I’m sure you’ll find stuff to do that’s warm and dry! And even a cafe is exciting stuff for them.

It’s also very snowy right now, some adjacent resorts closed due to the amount but she found the snow most interesting when it snowed, also like the outdoor pool when it snowed. Some resorts have a public pool if none in your hotel.

Enjoy the change of scenery 😅.

Quicksilver15 · 17/02/2026 21:43

Should add we did have snow boots, also a vinted special…

gototogo · 17/02/2026 21:46

Where are you going? If cairngorm your plan is fine, they clear the snow around the cafe / top of funicular railway. Standard kids snow suit or puddle suit layered underneath and wellies if working

Quicksilver15 · 17/02/2026 21:48

Oh one last thing, it’s sooo snowy in the alps right now a buggy of any sort is totally useless except in a hotel 😂. There was nothing clear anywhere so you need a carrier ideally, I did see the odd one or two parents with buggy’s but they were just carried by 2 adults when outside… might depend on elevation though as we only do ski in ski out with kids for convenience. Definitely only need a travel buggy for airport.

And she was fine on a sled with no back support as such just a normal plastic one from decathlon, it’s not like she was ever going to fall asleep in the thing and I didn’t send her off any hills in it.
