Pep talk sought for solo ski trip

Has anyone been on a solo ski/snowboard trip in self catering accommodation and not hated it?

Seeking positivity and encouragement. Would also love to hear any pitfalls to avoid or top tips. Thanks in advance.

I've not done a solo trip for a week but I love abroad near ski resorts ans often go on my own for the day and I love it - would love a week on my own. Why don't you Airbnb if that's an option?

I haven’t done a ski holiday solo, but I do a lot of day ski trips solo. You always meet people on lifts, so I find I spend my days talking more than I expect. Plus being able to just blast down slopes without having to keep an eye on anyone else is very satisfying.

I went on a long weekend solo to a chalet type arrangement. I will be honest, it was a bit lonely. I was also a bit nervous about skiing on my own - like you I am a slow skier and not overly confident. I think signing up for group lessons is definitely the way to go. That way you aren’t skiing on your own. I would probably pick a hotel over a chalet if I was doing it again as it would be easier to eat on your own than make conversation with other groups. I am not a big drinker either so having some solo time in a nice hotel bedroom to read and browse mumsnet was enjoyable.

Good point that it’s another bonus that I’ll not need to keep an eye on anyone else on the slopes. As in, anyone I know…I’ll still keep an eye out for other piste users generally.

Yes it’s nice being able to ski entirely at your own pace. Make sure you take breaks. I found on my own you drink and eat more quickly and as I am not particularly fit, I needed to factor in longer and more frequent stops - this may not be the case for you.

I haven't done it but think I would enjoy it, I usually go with no other adult, just my child and we are of very different skiing abilities so don't ski together much. I would sign up for group lessons because they are very chatty and friendly then enjoy time after lessons skiing easy runs at my pace, drinking hot chocolate whilst taking in the views and relaxing and reading in the evenings/just going to bed early as skiing can be exhausting.

I have done it. We are lucky and have a small house in an alpine town. I’ve been there on my own and got the bus up to the slopes. I actually really enjoy skiing on my own. I can take my time, take photos, ski the runs I want in the order I like. And in the evening I either read, or watch a film. I eat what I want and it’s great. If I fancy company I go out to a local bar for a glass of wine or a coffee. Or chat to people on lifts. Joy! Have fun OP. X

Oh wow, that sounds fab!
The only thing I’d add is to make sure family know approx where you are skiing (would find my iPhone work?) and that you carry ICE info on you, in case you’re injured and incapacitated (side eye at OH for head butting an Alp and knocking himself out)

CarolCave · 14/01/2026 12:54

@WorriedMillie Your poor OH 😮

I have done this three times, plus many short trips of 1-3 days. I may have to go on my own much more in future as my husband is thinking of hanging up his ski boots.

There really is nothing to it. I’ve done both half-board and self-catering and both have advantages and disadvantages. I was a member of the Ski Club of Great Britain for a while; most groups and reps were very welcoming, but one was less so.

Ultimately it depends on how you feel about skiing on your own. On the whole I actually prefer it because I can go at my own pace….. which is pretty fast.

One thing though: when is Easter this year? You’ll want to go to one of the higher resorts because snow conditions can deteriorate late in the season…

CarolCave · 14/01/2026 15:24

Thank you for the reassurance @Enrichetta, Easter is on 5 April this year.
