Ski trip Insurance question

ByCalmBrickPanda · 08/12/2025 08:00

I’m treating my children (21/24) to a week’s ski holiday in January in France, in memory of their mum who passed away 3 years ago.
Will we need to buy additional insurance with our ski passes or is the winter sports travel insurance all we need?
Grateful for any advice.

I'm not 100%, but winter sports cover (make sure it includes rescue off the mountain) should be OK. See if you can double-check tho, it's a while since I've been skiing!

Depends where you’re going, but in most French resorts you can opt to buy ‘Carre Neige’ insurance with your lift pass for a couple of euros per day. This is the insurance which will get you off the mountain, so strongly recommend you opt for this (or check out equivalent if skiing in another country). IME, winter snow sports insurance will only cover you for things like stolen skis, lost lift pass, no snow (as well as medical expenses) but it won’t cover you to get evacuated off the mountain in event of accident or injury.

Just seen you’ll be in France, so definitely pay the extra for the Carre Neige insurance. There should be details on the ski pass page of the resort website.

We have winter sports including off piste cover through Post Office. I don’t buy the extra Carre Neige insurance. Just double check the details of your policy… mine rolled over from last year (winter sports included) and when I looked to check re on/off piste cover I found they had excluded ALL winter sports. Cancelled and complained. And went to Post Office.

Just winter sports insurance should be enough but we also tend to get the Carre Neige add on because apparently it makes things easier on the mountain (ie ski patrol know you’re covered so no questions about how you’re paying).

That's great thank you for replies.
Will get the carre neige insurance with our passes.
Hope we don't have to use it!
Happy holidays to everyone

Point to note, and not sure if it'll be relevant. But most regular insurance only covers you skiing on-piste. A few cover off piste skiing if you are skiing with a qualified guide. You'd definitely need to take out specialist insurance if you plan on skiing off piste.

Sorry for your loss. Hope you have an amazing holiday!

Some polices cover you off piste with a qualified guide, ours does

Just to reiterate the point already made, sorry
