5 days of skiing - how many of each to pack

I’d really appreciate some help. DS is going on a ski trip with school in April for 5 days of skiing and 2 days travel

we’re going to aldi and Lidl this morning to get his supplies as we don’t want to spend loads

he’s got a package from school which includes ski boots. Ski jacket and helmet

quick question really, for 5 days of skiing how many of the following should I buy him?

  • gloves
  • base layers
  • ski socks
  • ski trousers
  • fleece to go over base layers
we will grab some waterproof walking boots nearer the time to wear when he isn’t skiing

hell take joggers and warm clothes for the evenings but we have no idea if he needs 5 sets of everything or if that’s excesssive!

OP - you've got just about everything he needs. Maybe get another base layer and possibly a snood/Buff. He'll probably already have a hat - he'll get a helmet with the rest of the skiing gear from the rental shop. Remember to pack suncream and sunglasses for spring skiing. Sunglasses are much more comfortable than goggles for skiing in warm weather, when he's sitting around at lunchtime and during the coach journey. Good walking boots will be fine - there is not going to be much snow on the ground in La Thuile in April, but there will be plenty on the pistes. La Thuile is a great place for beginners, and if he's a quick learner his group might make it over to La Rosiere in France which is on the same ski ticket.

He'll also need some cash - many places on the mountain still don't take electronic payments, so having some Euros means he can get a drink or snack. If there is room in the luggage, put in a packet of mini-chocs. He won't need 2 coats - there won't be enough room anyway.

Thanks everyone, we’ve been lucky and managed to get some more bits in a newly opened Lidl!

he’s now got
2 x gloves
5 x base layers
3 x ski trousers
2 x ski goggles
2 x ski socks

all that for around £120!

I’m going to book some ski lessons with snozone soon to get him started

he’ll need a few more pairs of socks but it’s an amazing start and he can wear his layers for scout camps too!

Honestly he does not need 3 pairs of ski trousers. I'd return at least 1 pair and get more socks.

3 pairs of outer ski trousers?!?! Absolutely not necessary. One is fine. More socks though.

2 sets of goggles is also not necessary unless they have different lenses but I can never be bothered changing lenses.

He doesn’t need 3 pairs of ski trousers. I packed an extra cheap pair for my 3YO last winter as there was a reasonable chance he could pee his pants during lessons but I’m assuming your son is well beyond that stage 🤣 Definitely return the extra 2. Get enough socks for every day. Are the 2 goggles low light and sun? That’s a good idea but you don’t need 2 pairs of the same.

Yes the ski goggles have different lenses, he has an eye condition so has to be careful with brightness. They were only £6.49 so much happier that he’s got both

Socks - He needs 5 pairs of socks, if not more, they’ll get soaked with sweat and stink.

Fleece - 2+ - two is minimum as he needs one if the other gets very wet or to change mid week bc he can’t wash them. I’d say 2-3.

Gloves - 1 - only needs one set of WATERPROOF, SKI gloves. Not fabric gloves that get wet. Ski gloves. Get him a set of under layer gloves for inside his ski gloves too.

Base layers - 2 sets (top and thermal trousers should be fine unless he smells and then maybe another set).

Salopettes (ski trousers) - 1. Doesn’t really need any more. They’re waterproof so more sets are just for style (or steez as it’s known on the slopes).

1 gloves, 2 of everything else

Bitzee · 28/11/2025 18:26

If the gloves cost £3.99 a second pair is definitely needed. They’re not going to be great at that price and I’d worry they’d get wet. I wouldn’t buy 2 pairs of £100 hestras though…
