Canada skiing - April 2026

We are considering a trip to Canada in April/may 2026. We will be visiting DS in Montreal but also want to go out west. We are both good skiers and would like to do a few days skiing if the conditions are good.

So my questions are…

  1. Will Mt Tremblant be worth skiing at that time?
  2. If we head to Banff and Lake Louise, where I think the skiing should be fine, where should we stay and where should we ski? Am thinking probably a max of 3 days.
  3. anything else we should consider?

Thanks!

Thanks @SonOfASkibum I have done a fair amount of googling but there’s so much out there I was wondering if anyone with real local knowledge might have suggestions. DS is going to Tremblant in early Dec do interested to hear what he thinks…. But I rather suspect the season will be over when we go.

No advice on skiing itself as we don’t skii, but been to Banff and Western Canada in the summer.
Main part of Banff of city centre looks a bit like a strip in LV, make sure you stay central as it’s a bit of a walk from one end to another, and all food/drink places are central as well.
Also prepare for MEGA busy.
If you plan to see Lake Louise you need to head there silly o clock in the morning to get either a parking spot or get a place on a guided tour, super popular and busy.

We absolutely loved western Canada, one of our favourite places we visited. If you ever get a chance head to Whistler or Sun Peaks, again, we visited on the summer but through the whole journey I romanticised how stunning must be there in the winter and how I want to live there haha

That’s interesting @BrightSpark10 thank you. I’ve heard some north American resorts get stupidly busy on bluebird days…. Which would not be my idea of fun. I’d rather go to a smaller lesser known place than spend all day in a big name queue! Even if you can look at amazing views!!

Yeah, I’ve seen videos on Instagram of the queues 🙈😬 There is also another place, about 20min drive from Banff, Canmore. We haven’t been but apprently it’s equally stunning, slightly less popular/crowded and tad cheaper than Banff, maybe that’s worth checking out as well. Not sure on skiing situation there.

If you want to ski you should ask on Snowheads — quite a few posters are N Am based or have made trips to a lot of resorts. I have been to Whistler and experienced one of the epic crowd days you refer to (people come out for the powder rather than the blue sky per se). While the queues can be long the snow is out of this world.

I've been in Whistler in April and the snow was still great, but it wasn't madly busy even though it was Easter. It's so well organised and there are so many lifts.

Mustangsallyis · 19/11/2025 11:30

Doubt there will be much snow coverage in early Dec. They’re blowing snow hard just now for the World Cup race but likely only a limited number of runs will be open.

April can be a bit of a gamble - weather often balmy which can mean slushy conditions, especially on the front side after about mid morning - and there will definitely be no skiing in May there.

Sorry - my post above was in relation to Tremblant

I thought so! While I’d love to ski there I’m also conscious that the main aim of this potential holiday is to see some of Canada… and that’s going to be better when it isn’t the depths of winter. But if those with knowledge want to tell me I’m wrong, please do!

There is a bit of travelling involved to get to the ski hills in Banff (sunshine & lake Louise in particular). IMHO you would spend a lot of time on a bus and its maybe not worth it for a 3 day visit. Different matter if you were staying for a longer period of time.

RaisedVegBeds · 02/12/2025 22:02

The issue with smaller Canadian resorts is they are often shut at that time, even if there is lots of snow, because they just don’t get the numbers to make it viable to stay open. The earlier in April you go the more choice of resorts you will have.

Sunshine (Banff) normally skis late, as does Whistler. If I was going to Sunshine and only for 3 days I would probably stay on the mountain - the gondola adds to day if you are staying in Banff and if you are only doing 3 days you wouldn’t go stir crazy (did a week once and that was too long to stay there). You could always stay a night in Banff itself or even in Lake Louise to tourist in other areas.

Tremblant was very icy when I went (& that was February). Lots of machine snow.

Thanks @RaisedVegBeds helpful to know.

I’d argue that it can be crazy busy. I’ve been to Whistler 4 times and it’s getting busier and busier. I still love it, but the queue to get up the hill can be mental.

Radiatorvalves · 07/12/2025 20:41

@Justthetonicandgin I’ve heard it can be bad. I’ve just skied (yesterday) at the first day of the season in Serre Chevalier (France). Great conditions for early December, blue skies… and the longest queue was maybe 5 mins? Possibly less. €52 for the day. I’m really keen to know whether Canada is worth it.

Lake Louise for skiing is a good 40 minute drive from Banff. Your options just outside Banff are Mt Norquay and Sunshine.

There is also Nakiska in Kananaskis, which is a 40 minute drive from Canmore.

Panicmode1 · 07/12/2025 20:50

We went to Silver Star last February and it was magical - we flew via Vancouver to Kelowna. The longest queue was about 3 minutes and the powder was epic ...I have no idea if it would be open in April though.

Hiptothisjive · 07/12/2025 20:54

Okay so speaking as a Canadian who skis and has been to all of those places I would just point out a few things.

Montreal to Calgary is about four and a half hours to fly. Banff is then another two potentially. Do you have an extra day for travel?

Whistler from Montreal would be 5.5/6.

Snow isn’t dependable and Mt. Trembkant can go either way. Out west you shoukd be fine. I have skied Whistler end of April and it was a bit slushy and you can only ski at the top. From Vancouver it’s a two hour drive.

I think you are kinda going at the wrong time of the year to ski. Contrary to belief Canada is very hot in the summer. Average temp for Mt Trembaknt end April is around 15 degrees in the day and it will be sunny. May is over 20 degrees.

Canada is amazing and spectacular. There are lines at every ski resort (been all over the alps too). But you are going in very end of season/off season. A lot of thr lines in Banff and national parks are to preserve the parks.

I have skied a lot and will admit I love whistler. The ski area is phenomenal as nothing is out of bounds. When the snow comes there is nothing like it. I love the fact you can ski what would be off piste in Europe but it’s marked and the bowls are crazy good. The variety of terrain is amazing and it pushed my skiing on no end, but that’s why on a good snow day, it’s busy!

Justthetonicandgin · 07/12/2025 20:57

Oh, and you mention cost - the ski pass is expensive as hell!

Radiatorvalves · 08/12/2025 07:56

Loving all this info. It’s so helpful. TBH as much as I love skiing this trip is more about seeing Canada with skiing a potential add on. The pros and cons are great to hear.
