School Ski trip what’s needed?

storminabuttercup · 24/10/2025 14:16

DS is due to go on a school ski trip for 7 nights next year, we are total novices and I’ve no Idea what he will need but as we approach Christmas family are looking for suggestions on what to buy him and have suggested ski gear but I’m not sure how much of each thing he needs
obv only one ski jacket
we’ve bought ski trousers does he need more than one pair?
then I’m guessing thermals but do people generally wear them more than one day or will he need x7?
we have gloves and goggles
any help would be super appreciated

oh he’s going to Austria if that has a bearing on things
thank you

Oh and pack sliders or crocs if you can get them in for walking from ski boot room to hotel room and in the room.

All this but to confirm, only 2 sets of thermals and 3 prs ski socks required. Can wear for more than one day.

Agree - 2 sets of thermals and 3 socks, and days each.

make sure he has a short sleeved tshirt for each day so that’s worn once.

my son (8) gets HOT so he has a base layer top, short sleeved Tshirt over it, then jacket. He opts not to wear base leggings as he is like a water bottle.

I would also buy 1 x microfleece if it’s super cold as another layer. This gets worn once in a blue moon if windy and son usually takes it off.

I would also buy 1 x snood so neck is warm on cold days too.

2 x gloves as he will spend a lot of the time of the floor so can dry out.

decathlon will be cheap and sufficient for all of this. Warm hat for the evening/when not wearing helmet is important.

I buy my sons snow boots off Vinted each year. Whilst it may not be that cold, they’re kids so will play in the snow so worth getting some.

we go January - can’t wait. LOVE it.

Oh pack his crocs/slides so he can wear them to/from boot room!

Oh sorry yes it’s ski boots they are hiring not snow boots…
I’ll go look at snow boots but will be a nightmare for him as he hates anything but trainers I’d not thought about them walking around!

Don’t let him think he can walk around in trainers outside. He will look like a right plonker slipping all over the place!!

walking boots if he won’t wear snow boots

Definitely just 1 jacket and 1 salopettes. It depends on the base layers you get and (ahum) how hygienic he is. I find the synthetic base layers get very smelly. Merino wool less so but they're more expensive. You'd probably get away with 3 sets though even if they are a bit whiffy on the 2nd wear. Fleeces are good as mid layers if needed. Ski socks (trespass had a good sale when I went for our stuff the other day). Ski gloves were also in the sale, we always get 2 pairs as its a nightmare if they get snow inside or you lose one!
Take into account vinted, you can also hire ski clothes from online shops for UK delivery or mountain warehouse do sets of salopettes and jackets for less than £100.

ConnectingPoint · 25/10/2025 09:14

Check out eBay and Vinted. Kids often wear this stuff once and either don't ever ski again or if they do the kit doesn't fit.

I sold my kids whole kit (clothing, goggles etc) on eBay and Vinted.

storminabuttercup · 25/10/2025 09:46

This is all so useful thanks all

seems not everyone agrees on snow boots so shall see what school say on that score

walking boots if he won’t wear snow boots

Edited

I have been skiing multiple years, in multiple months, in multiple resorts with many, many teenagers and I have never yet seen a male teenager wear snow boots. Teenage girls maybe in some fluffy ones or the big strappy ones, teenage boys, rarely in leather boots if young teens. Older teen boys, NEVER. Don't do it to him. He will be fine in air forces, Nike 95 and the like, the leather ones with chunky soles. The pavements are gritted in resort. They don't slip around.

Thelondonone · 25/10/2025 09:53

Austrian school trips often bus the kids to the slopes so it may not be very snowy in resort. Definitely ask school about snow boots. I say don’t bother-we don’t walk that much in the evening. He will love it. Be prepared for him to be homesick on whingy Wednesday, by that point they are tired. I’d also get him to do some ski exercises before he goes. Some kids really struggle with 4-5 hours for 6 days in a row-it’s tiring on the old muscles.

That’s great advice, he recently did a 4 night trip abroad not sports but full on and he was indeed a bit fed up by day 4
its such an amazing experience though and I’m so glad he can go, I’m not able to do anything like this so it’s not something we could do as a family so appreciative of school for the opportunity

Thank you @mysoulmiohe hates anything but trainers and has decent ones including Af1 and some max with decent soles so hopefully they will be ok

It doenst have to be snow boots, but I really wouldn’t only use trainers. They will be soaked and slippery in minutes ( I live in ski area). Hiking boots or proper waterproof trainer boots are needed.
I wear my black timberlands all winter for day to day use, and only snow boots for off road track thick snow walking. So would he wear something like these?

MellowPinkDeer · 26/10/2025 10:26

Did you not get a list? We had an information evening. Do you know if any hire items are already included?

essentially you need a ski jacket and trousers, base layer thermals , ski socks and then thin fleeces and body warmers made of polyester that wick moisture away. Then a helmet , goggles and sun cream. Mountain warehouse has 20% off just now and lots of good staple items.

nothing made of t shirt or sweatshirt material as of you get wet or sweat, they stay wet and then you’re cold. For a week I’ve brought 4 socks and 4 sets of thermals and base items.

They'll get ruined if there's snow in resort.

mamagogo1 · 26/10/2025 15:24

2 sets of socks and thermals (3 if feeling flush) couple of fleece mid layers ideally (in case get damp) boots to wear when not skiing (I wear normal hiking boots myself. Snood / tube scarf. Jacket and salopettes, ski gloves and normal thin gloves for when not skiing, goggles, sun glasses on a strap, hat, backpack, water bottle, snacks for during the day, sun screen, normal clothes for when not skiing.

personally I actually wear waterproof trousers instead of salopettes with joggers over thermals underneath, works better if temperatures are closer freezing rather than really cold, but windy, 3 in 1 fitted jackets can be a sub for ski jackets again good for windy resorts, I prefer to layer and be really waterproof!

LIZS · 26/10/2025 15:50

I think most make do with regular sportswear as layers and for lounging around post ski. Specifics are the outer wear, waterproof and breathable, gloves and long ski socks, thermals in case it is chilly, neck gaiter, goggles to go over helmet which presumably is hired with skis/boots/poles. Then hat and sunglasses for non skiing time outdoors. Sliders for indoors, walking boots for outdoors, trainers for activities and travel. Maybe swimwear if there is a pool in resort.

And don’t forget suncream and lipbalm, ideally pocket sized to reapply on the mountain.

nightswimming1 · 27/10/2025 02:45

How old is the young man going skiing? I’d never send my older teen with just two sets of thermals. That would not be pleasant! 3/4 tops and 3 bottoms. 3 pairs socks. Wearing them twice especially in hired boots is the absolute max. My younger teen maybe could get away with two thermal tops but I’d send 3 I expect.
Both wear waterproof trainers. It really varies on time of year and resort but if it’s snowed in the evening and they are going out for an activity the pavements won’t have been cleared.

RedwallMattimeo · 27/10/2025 03:35

How old is he? Has he had his growth spurt yet? I would be nervous about buying stuff now to be worn in Feb as it may not fit by then!
Aldi, Decathlon & Mountain Warehouse are your friend when it comes to buying good quality but reasonable ski wear. As well as Vinted,
With teen boys, in terms of how much kit to take, it’s a balance of baggage allowance, smell and their natural inclination to wear the clothes at the top of their case on repeat.

storminabuttercup · 27/10/2025 06:58

im taking all this on board thanks guys

he’s 15 and had his growth spurt (fingers crossed as he’s already in xl men’s)

Ill definitely be buying enough socks for every ski day and thermals I’ll get enough so he only has to wear twice max (so 3 sets 5 days)

school haven’t been helpful as yet but apparently there will be a meeting near the time, the reason we’re looking now is family would like to help with some items as it’s a costly trip and although they aren’t the most exciting gifts he does realise we’ve really stretched finances to be able to send him also we’ve found things this weekend in sales or with discounts which has really helped

my main concern now is getting everything in the case and under the weight limit (which im not entirely sure of either as don’t actually know which airline or indeed airport or flight times so can’t make an educated guess)

A snood or gater not a scarf for his neck!

It is super unlikely but scarfs can dangle and give me the absolute fear on chair lifts when I see kids wearing them.

Thermals- 2 sets is plenty!

Trainers are fine. Never worn snow boots in all my years skiing only ever made the investment when I did seasons.

Tiger balm- this will save his aching legs rub on each morning in sore areas. You can buy ski shin protectors. Could make an excellent Christmas present.

Blanklet for coach. Eye mask, ear plugs too. Slippers for the accommodation power bank for the journey. Chargers and adaptors. Take a couple of multipacks of fave chocolate bars for a mid morning snack. We always have a snickers or mars bar!

Invest in a second pair of gloves as a learn he will fall alot and his hands will get wet!

Sun cream. And tell him to reapply! Even on a cloudy day.

ibuprofen for the aches and pains.

Radiatorvalves · 27/10/2025 07:25

I ski every year and have never had snow boots. We usually drive from the valley to 1600m and I wear trainers. If it’s really snowy I have cheap decathlon hiking boots. Can you say which resort he’s going to? People may be able to advise on whether trainers will be ok. Sometimes schools might do an outdoor evening activity which might be better in hiking boots. TBH I’d prob send him with 2 pairs of trainers and instructions to dry them out if they get wet.

Caspianberg · 27/10/2025 07:30

He should be fine luggage wise. As they will have at least 15kg prob 20kg checked bag. They won’t be hand luggage only

you wear your main shoes and ski coat travelling so it’s only salopettes to pack that are bulky. And your hiring ski boots/ helmet/ skis so no problem there.

They don’t really need that many non ski outfits as your in ski stuff all day until about 4-5pm. So evening stuff can be reworn.

we have thermals, but I just wear a regular knitted jumper or cardigan skiing, so don’t worry about top layers being anything special. Just warm.

If any help, every ski trip my boys have been on has been flight and they've always had 20 or 23kg limit.

mysoulmio · 27/10/2025 07:33

Can I juts repeat that I have never seen a 15y old boy in snow boots. They will be a waste of money - trust me, I've tried!

I really do appreciate all these comments

I don’t actually know what resort just ‘Austria’ but if I find out I’ll post

we’ve had very little info but sure we will find out more nearer the time
