Wondering what Tignes Les Brevieres is like in terms of what is there and snow at Christmas?

We are thinking of going there this Christmas .. two kids.. aged 12 and 15. We are all intermediate / advanced skiers.

What is the snow there like at Xmas? Are there many shops / restaurants?

What are the lifts up to the main Tignes network like?

We stayed in Tignes 1800 in Feb last year and loved it! There’s a gondola that will get you up to 1800 that takes you to the main bubble over to the runs centred around Le Lac. Amazing skiing. Definitely make the trip to the glacier as it is stunning…top of the world.

Our DC aren’t teenagers yet so don’t need excitement in the evenings. The villages lower in the resort are quieter but will have restaurants/shops (the one in 1800 was like a Harrods hyper market! Incredible food including inc live lobsters). If you want a bit more to do of an evening then higher up the resort may be better.

Id love to go back as it was just beautiful 😍

I wouldn't choose Les Brevieres tbh. Unless you're getting an absolute bargain apartment. We ski there at Easter and have never skied below 1800 and even the runs down to 1800 can be patchy and quite tricky because of it. There's a fairly new gondola down to les brevs from 1800 that I think runs until 8pm. There are more bars in 1800. But 1800 is still pretty quiet.

Given you're all decent skiers, you'll be keen to make the most of the vast expanse of runs and being right at the far side of Tignes will make it a bit of a schelp to get over to the Val D side.

If you can stretch to it, I'd definitely go for Val Claret. It's right in the middle and super easy to get to Val D and also all of Tignes. The funicular will take you up the glacier. Definitely recommend the red Double M run down from the glacier (can also get the les lanches chair) it's wuite possibly my favourite run ever.

Plenty bars and apres in Val Claret without being full on party resort so still good for families. Le Lac a bit more chilled. You'd need to either ski down the black Johan Clarey or take the Toviere bubble down to lac if you go over to Val side. But doesn't sound like the black would be an issue for you. It's a nice run. Lavachet is joined onto le lac. Slightly cheaper but still pretty well connected.

I wouldn’t at Christmas: it’s 1500m and you risk limited/no snow and you’re a bit out on a limb down there. You can ski to 1800 and take the bubble down from there to Les Brevieres but the runs to 1800 can be icy and not that suitable if you’re a beginner. Also, the regular buses that service Le Lac and Val Claret don’t go down there (there is a bus service but less frequent). I would be looking at Le Lac or Val Claret - better snow and a lot more in the way of entertainment or other activities if you want a day off from skiing.

Ignore comment about beginners - just re-read and can see you’re all experienced. Staying at Le Lac or Val Claret will put you much more in the middle of the resort to make the most of the area.

Any advice on where one might stay with a large family in Tignes please ?

stringbean · 26/11/2025 07:23

Do you specifically want Les Brevieres? It’s the lowest part of the resort. Budget? Are you looking for chalet, hotel or s/c? What skiing ability is everyone and when are you planning to go?

we stayed in Tignes Les Brevieres the week before Christmas a few years ago. There was plenty of snow, and we had a very good week ( apart from one of our DC having a nasty accident). We got a huge bargain in a catered chalet and that made us feel very good about being there - the chalet and team were lovely. It’s not the best location on the resort but worked fine for a week for us and didn’t stop us having a great time. The village is quiet, only a couple of options for bars/restaurants but it had its charms.

We got across most of the domain and one day drove to the other side of Val to ski more on the far end.

I stayed there beginning of December in 2017. Most snow I had ever seen. I had to get my car pulled out by the council equivalent. Couple of nice bars. I drove to Val D’isere which is easy to do from there as it’s before the road splits if I remember. Great home runs.

Tinges and Val d'isere is probably my favourite skiing in Alps - it's got everything from high altitude glacier skiing to sweeping tree runs. I usually go at Easter which can be a bit dicey down to Les Brev (i stay in Le Lac), but conditions look really good this year. It's also a great resort for intermediate/advanced skiers.
